First successful 'spoofing' of unmanned aerial vehicles

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? A University of Texas at Austin research team successfully demonstrated for the first time that the GPS signals of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), or drone, can be commandeered by an outside source -- a discovery that could factor heavily into the implementation of a new federal mandate to allow thousands of civilian drones into the U.S. airspace by 2015.

Cockrell School of Engineering Assistant Professor Todd Humphreys and his students were invited by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to attempt the demonstration in White Sands, New Mexico in late June. Using a small but sophisticated UAV along with hardware and software developed by Humphreys and his students, the research team repeatedly overtook navigational signals going to the GPS-guided vehicle.

Known as "spoofing," the technique creates false civil GPS signals that trick the vehicle's GPS receiver into thinking nothing is amiss -- even as it steers a new navigational course induced by the outside hacker. Because spoofing fools GPS receivers' on both their location and time, some fear that most GPS-reliant devices, infrastructure and markets are vulnerable to attacks. That fear was underscored -- but not proven -- when a U.S. military drone disappeared over Iran late last year and showed up a week later, intact, and in the care of Iranians who claimed to have brought the vehicle down with spoofing.

The recent demonstration by University of Texas at Austin researchers is the first known unequivocal demonstration that commandeering a UAV via GPS spoofing is technically feasible.

"I think this demonstration should certainly raise some eyebrows and serve as a wake-up call of sorts as to how safe our critical infrastructure is from spoofing attacks," said Milton R. Clary, a senior Department of Defense (DoD) Aviation Policy Analyst at Overlook Systems Technologies, which is working with the federal government to develop programs that identify and mitigate spoofing attacks.

Humphreys said his research team wanted to demonstrate the potential risks associated with spoofing early on in the Federal Aviation Administration's task to write the mandated rules that will allow government and commercial drones in the U.S. airspace by 2015.

"We're raising the flag early on in this process so there is ample opportunity to improve the security of civilian drones from these attacks, as the government is committed to doing," Humphreys said.

Prior to the White Sands demonstration, Humphreys and his students worked with university athletics officials to perform a trial run at the Darrell K. Royal stadium.

High school students visiting campus for the university's My Introduction to Engineering summer camp watched the demonstration and were able to ask Humphreys and his students questions about their work.

Humphreys began the research on GPS security prior to joining The University of Texas at Austin three years ago, but he said the research received a crucial boost of momentum and financial support from the university and the Cockrell School of Engineering.

"What's great at The University of Texas at Austin is this structure and culture in place that supports incoming professors with the funds to do risky types of research -- the kind that's so bold and forward-thinking that it might not have an outside sponsor to fund it yet," Humphreys said. "It's a distinct and valuable trait of the university that benefits me, my students and the types of research we can pursue."

The interdisciplinary research coupled undergraduate and graduate students from aerospace engineering and electrical and computer engineering; specifically, from the Center for Space Research and the Wireless Networking and Communications Group. Over the course of the project, students designed hardware and software, and learned to improvise on the spot when things didn't always go their way.

"During the demonstration at White Sands I was so impressed by how resourceful my students were in the face of technical setbacks we had in the beginning," Humphreys said. "They kept a steady hand and we prevailed in the end, which really showed me the flexibility of these young and bright minds."

Daniel Shepard, an aerospace engineering graduate student who lead the UAV spoofing effort, said he was grateful for the opportunity to do the hands-on research beginning when he was an undergraduate student.

"It's rewarding to lead research that has an impact on improving national security, and, on a personal level, this specific project had a lot of value for me because I was working on things, like software development, that I typically wouldn't be involved with as an aerospace student," Shepard said. "The unique fusion of electrical engineering and aerospace engineering has been very valuable for cultivating my engineering expertise."

During the spoofing demonstration at White Sands, the research team took control of a hovering UAV from about a kilometer away. Next year, they plan to perform a similar demonstration on a moving UAV from 10 kilometers away.

President Obama's remarks in Colorado Springs on Waldo Canyon Fire

Here is the text of the remarks President Barack Obama made June 29 at Fire Station No. 2 in Colorado Springs after touring the area of the Waldo Canyon Fire, as released by the White House.

THE PRESIDENT: Well, we just had a chance to tour some of the damage that's been done by this devastating fire. I've had a chance to thank Mayor Bach as well as Governor Hickenlooper. And the entire congressional delegation, members of the fire service, the Forest Service, as well as local fire officials have gotten a full briefing.

I think what you see here is an example of outstanding

coordination and cooperation between federal, state and local agencies. We have been putting everything we have into trying to deal with what's one of the worst fires that we've seen here in Colorado. And it's still early in the fire season, and we still got a lot more work to do. But because of the outstanding work that's been done, because of not only the coordination but also some unprecedented arrangements that have been made with military resources combined with the civil resources, we're starting to see progress.

Obviously, as you saw in the some of these subdivisions, the devastation is enormous. And our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families who have been affected.

One of the things that I've tried to emphasize is that whether it's fires in Colorado or flooding in the northern parts of Florida, when natural disasters like this hit, America comes together. And we all recognize that there but for the grace of God, go I. We've got to make sure that we have each other's backs. And that spirit is what you're seeing in terms of volunteers, in terms of firefighters, in terms of government officials. Everybody is pulling together to try to deal with this situation.

Now, as I said, we're not completely out of the woods yet. These folks, some of them have been working 18-hour days, 20-hour days, trying to make sure that these fires get put out. They're going to be carefully monitoring the situation, and ultimately they're going to need a little bit of help from Mother Nature in order to fully extinguish these fires.

In the meantime, some lessons are being learned about how we can mitigate some of these fires in the future, and I know that the Mayor and Governor, and other local officials are already in those conversations. It means that hopefully, out of this tragedy, some long-term planning occurs, and it may be that we can curb some of the damage that happens the next time, even though you obviously can't fully control fires that are starting up in these mountains.

Last point I just want to make -- and that is that we can provide all the resources, we can make sure that they're well-coordinated, but as I just told these firefighters, what we can do is to provide them with the courage and the determination and the professionalism, the heart that they show when they're out there battling these fires.

When we had a chance on site to see some guys who had just saved three homes in a community that had been devastated, for those families, the work and the sacrifice of those firefighters means the world to them, and they are genuine heroes.

And so we want to just say thank you to all the folks who have been involved in this. We're proud of you. We appreciate what you do each and every day. And so for folks all around the country, I hope you are reminded of how important our fire departments are, our Forest Service is. Sometimes they don't get the credit that they deserve until your house is burning down, or your community is being threatened. And you have to understand they're putting their lives at risk to save us and to help us. We've got to make sure that we remember that 365 days a year, not just when tragedies like this strike.

Thank you very much, everybody.

Toyota to recall Lexus SUVs to fix floor mat

CNBC's Phil LeBeau has the latest details on Toyota's recall.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

Having hoped to put its embarrassing unintended acceleration scandal behind it, Lexus is now recalling two more models due to the possibility loose floor mats could cause accelerator pedals to jam, leading the vehicles to surge out of control.

The two models covered by the latest recall are the Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h hybrid, with a total of nearly 134,000 vehicles involved.? The new service actions are relatively modest when compared to the millions of vehicles covered by earlier sudden acceleration problems, but the latest recall puts Toyota back into the spotlight after having spent the last several years trying to rebuild its reputation for high quality and reliability.

?It was just beginning to fade from people?s memories,? said analyst Rebecca Lindland, of IHS Automotive.? ?This is like scratching an old wound.?

Honda Polishes its Environmental Credentials

Arguably the worst public relations crisis in Toyota Motor Co. history began in mid-2009 when a California Highway Patrol officer and several family members were killed when a Lexus they had borrowed surged out of control, plunging off a highway and bursting into flames.

While Toyota had been facing accusations of unintended acceleration for some time the event led the automaker to order the recall of 3.8 million Lexus and Toyota brand vehicles because loose mats could catch under the accelerator pedal.? Two months later it added a second callback, this one involving millions more vehicles equipped with potentially sticky accelerator assemblies.?

Then, in early 2010, Toyota announced it would temporary halt production of some of its most popular vehicles to replace the accelerator units. ?

Toyota, BMW Expand Their Alliance

Further complicating matters, the maker was slammed by a series of unrelated problems, from steering issues with the Corolla or minivans that were experiencing severe corrosion problems.? In all, Toyota was forced to recall more than 10 million vehicles ? a company that was long known for bulletproof reliability ended the year with more recalls than any other manufacturer in the business.

Critics contended that the two recalls did not address all the problems allegedly causing Toyota products to race out of control.? That possibility was raised during angry hearings on Capitol Hill in which Toyota President Akio Toyoda came under severe criticism.

Federal safety regulators also were targeted for allegedly going soft on the maker, secret documents suggesting Toyota had found ways to get the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to back down on one earlier safety problem, saving the company millions of dollars.

Shift to City Living Threatens Auto Industry

The government empowered two separate independent studies, one run by NASA, the other by the National Science Academy, looking into the possibility of unknown gremlins that might be causing Toyota?s electronic engine controllers to malfunction.? Both studies cleared the maker ? driver error taking the bulk of the blame.?

But investigators also suggested it was possible that they simply hadn?t been able to isolate random electronic issues.? That claim has been the centerpiece of extensive legal action aimed at Toyota by those claiming to have experienced unintended acceleration.

The latest recall harkens back to the very first Toyota ordered to deal with the ?UA? issue, potential carpet entrapment forcing it to order repairs on 131,800 2010-model RX 350 crossovers and another 22,200 RX 450 hybrids.

?It will be interesting to see if that affects efforts to settle the ongoing legal problems,? said analyst Lindland.

Owners of the involved vehicles will receive a safety recall notification by first class mail in early August 2012. ?Lexus dealers will remedy the involved vehicles at no cost to the customers.
