(AP) ? Former Prime Minister Tony Blair said Monday that he couldn't stand up to the Britain's media tycoons while in power, telling an official media ethics inquiry that doing so could have dragged his administration into a political quagmire.

Blair's testimony, briefly interrupted by a heckler who burst into the courtroom to call him a war criminal, shed light on the canny media strategy used to create the "New Labour" image that repackaged his party as more mainstream and business friendly, bringing it back to power after 18 years in opposition.

Blair, who was premier from 1997 to 2007, enjoyed strong press support in his early years, including backing from media mogul Rupert Murdoch's influential newspapers. But he found himself isolated near the end of his decade in power due in large part to his unpopular decision to join the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

The greying ex-prime minister said he long had concerns about what he once described as the "feral beasts" of the media but had to tread carefully where press barons were concerned.

"I took a strategic decision to manage these people, not confront them," he told Lord Justice Brian Leveson, who is leading the inquiry. "I didn't say that I feared them ... (but) had you decided to confront them, everything would have been pushed to the side. It would have been a huge battle with no guarantee of winning."

Leveson's inquiry was set up following revelations of phone hacking at Murdoch's News of the World tabloid, a scandal which has rocked the British establishment and raised questions about whether top politicians helped shield Murdoch ? and the media in general ? from official scrutiny.

Blair's time at the top has come under particular scrutiny because of the unlikely ? and mutually beneficial ? alliance the media-savvy prime minister forged between his left-wing Labour Party and Murdoch's News Corp. ? a company whose holdings include the populist The Sun newspaper and the right-wing Fox News network.

Blair became so friendly with Murdoch that he was chosen to be the godfather to one of Murdoch's children. The Blair government's relationship with Murdoch has since been described by several former colleagues as having been too close for comfort.

The former prime minister made no apologies for courting Murdoch, saying he was just one of several media tycoons who could make life difficult if they weren't happy with a position he was taking.

He denied doing any kind of deal with Murdoch, "either express or implied" ? although he acknowledged calling the Australian-American tycoon ahead of elections to make sure that Labour could count on News Corp.'s support.

Blair's testimony was interrupted when a heckler burst in through a secure corridor behind Leveson, shouting: "This man should be arrested for war crimes!" before being removed by security. British media reported that the heckler, who identified himself as filmmaker David Lawley Wakelin, had previously heckled Blair over the 2003 invasion of Iraq at a televised question and answer session.

Such incidents ? a testament to the divisiveness of Blair's decision to go to war in Iraq ? are routine. Last week, a handful of protesters yelling out "warmonger" interrupted his speech at Colby College in Maine.

Blair, wearing a navy suit and sporting a tan, watched impassively. Leveson, looking ruffled, said he would investigate how the man managed to sneak in to the restricted area.

Wakelin ? who was released without charge ? later told London radio that he took advantage of an unguarded door in the maze-like Royal Courts of Justice, where the inquiry is being held.

Blair spent a considerable amount of time challenging the reputation his lieutenants built up for bullying, manipulation, and "spin" in his decade in office.

Still, he acknowledged that politics and media had become "far more rude and brutal ? and in a sense crude ? in its interaction."

Blair's appearance kicked off an important week at the judge-led inquiry. Current ministers, including Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Education Minister Michael Gove and Home Secretary Theresa May, are due to testify in the coming days.

Prime Minister David Cameron is also expected to testify before Leveson, whose inquiry was set up last year after it emerged that reporters at the Murdoch-owned News of the World tabloid had routinely hacked into the phones of public figure and crime victims.

The scandal has rocked Britain's establishment, leading to the arrest or resignation of dozens of journalists, media executives, political operatives and police, prison and military officials. It's also exposed a pattern of wrongdoing across the British press, from bribery to blackmail.

The investigation continues: As Blair was testifying, police said they'd arrested a 42-year-old woman on suspicion of money laundering offenses linked to the hacking scandal.

Difference Between Ford Taurus SE and Taurus SES

Ford Taurus SE vs Taurus SES

The Ford Taurus is a sedan that has been in production for almost three decades. It has gone through a number of revisions and models. Two of said models are the Taurus SE and the Taurus SES. The main difference between the Taurus SE and SES is their position on the trim scale. The Taurus SE was considered to be a mid-level offering with the Taurus SES right above it as the next trim level.

I used the word ?was? because this is no longer the case. Both the SE and the SES were introduced in the year 2000, in the fourth generation of the vehicle, to add more choices to the Taurus line-up. This persisted until the year 2005 when Ford decided to drop the SES line along with one other. The SE continued on for 3 more years, but was also eventually dropped in 2008.

While the two existed, a variety of minor differences between the Taurus SE and SES existed. Although the actual differences may vary from one year to another, it is the SES that got the better features to match the appropriately higher price. Some of the premium options of the SE were also included as standard in the SES, and some of the options in the SES were not available in the SE.

But, the most notable option that you can only get in the SES is the Duratec 30 V6 engine. Although it has the same displacement as the Vulcan V6 that you would get in the SE, it produces 45 more horsepower for a total of 200. It also produces a lot more torque for increased acceleration.

If you buy the Taures SES as stock, then the differences between it and the Taurus SE are quite minimal; just a few trims and minor features. The true reason for getting the Taurus SES is so that you can upgrade to the Duratec 30 engine. This gives you the sporty performance without paying a very steep price that other models have.

Summary:

  1. The Taurus SES is a higher trim level than the Taurus SE
  2. The Taurus SES has been discontinued since 2004 while the Taurus SE is still in production
  3. The Taurus SES can have a more powerful engine than the Taurus SE

How To Pick The Healthiest Frozen Treats

  • Ice Cream

It's easy to go overboard when you're serving yourself from a party-size tub of ice cream at a cookout, but aim for about half a cup, or roughly the size of half of your fist, says Heller, which could still run you nearly 200 calories and 11 grams of fat, according to the USDA.

If you're ordering at an ice cream shop, beware the generous server who extends your swirl well above the brim of the cup, she warns. "You think, 'Awesome, I'm getting extra!' But you're also getting extra calories."

When buying your own ice cream, Zied recommends comparing the labels of a few different brands for fat, calories and sugar. Keep in mind the amount of sugar listed does include sugar that occurs naturally in milk.

If nothing but your favorite full-fat flavor will do, just shrink the portion size even more. Zied says she serves ice cream to her young son in a three to four ounce Dixie cup.

Flickr photo by TheCulinaryGeek

  • Frozen Yogurt

It's true that the probiotics in fro-yo can provide some health benefits in comparison to ice creams, but be aware that that Pinkberry isn't always that much lower in calories than regular ice cream. It's easy to get caught up in the idea that frozen yogurt is good for you, but portion sizes still apply. Nutrition information is often based on a half-cup serving, says Heller, but then the stores don't even stock a half-cup-sized dish, and you really have no idea what you're getting, she says. Eyeball a half-fist-size portion and only add a teaspoon or two of toppings.

Also, keep in mind that not all products labeled "frozen yogurt" contain any live active cultures, according to the National Yogurt Association. Some manufacturing procedures actually kill off these good bacteria, so look for the Live & Active Cultures seal.

Flickr photo by pamlau

  • Frozen Kefir Or Greek Yogurt

These healthy buzzwords have acquired a bit of a health halo -- you might think they're better for you than they really are. Both Zied and Heller recommend comparing the ingredients, fat and sugar content before automatically grabbing a pint of frozen Greek. For example, the new Ben and Jerry's Greek flavors have around 200 calories per half-cup serving, 7 to 8 grams of fat and 23 to 26 grams of sugar.

But you can make your own, says Heller. Start off with some fat-free plain Greek or regular yogurt, and add layers of your favorite fruit or a little honey into an ice pop mold and freeze. Roll the finished product in granola or chopped nuts for some crunch, or dip it in dark chocolate, she suggests.

Flickr photo by slgckgc

  • Frozen Fruit Bars

When comparing store-bought brands, look for a bar that's no more than 100 or 150 calories, says Zied. There are some 100 percent fruit juice bars out there, she says, but plenty also brag that they're "made with real fruit" or "contain half a serving of fruit" that, upon closer, inspection list sugar before any real fruit on the nutrition label. And don't forget that any pops with coconut will be higher in calories and fat than other fruit bars.

You can also make your own, by freezing 100 percent fruit juice in an ice pop mold, says Heller. That way, you control what goes into the mix. Dilute high-calorie juice with water or add chunks of your favorite fruit (or veggies!).

Flickr photo by jessicafm

  • Sorbet

Often fat-free, this fruit-based frozen treat can be a slimmer option than ice cream or yogurt, but will still contain plenty of sugar, both naturally occurring in fruit and sometimes added. "Look for fruit on the label," says Zied, and for as few ingredients as possible, "because that makes it closer to being somewhat of a real food," she says.

Flickr photo by Angela Schmeidel Randall

  • Fudge Pops

The 100 to 150 calorie rule of thumb applies here as well. And beware of lengthy ingredients lists. "The shorter the list probably the less harmful the product is," says Zied. A number of brands now make low-calorie chocolately treats and even some that are fat-free.

  • Flavored Ice Pops

The childhood favorite is low in calories, thanks to its relatively small size. But prominent ingredients include high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and food colorings.

It's best to skip sweets like these, says Zied. "I'd much rather someone have ice cream or frozen yogurt, actual real foods," she says. "If you can't identify where it comes from, it's not the greatest thing to have."

Flickr photo by PakaLoeff

  • Slush

Slush is guilty of many of the same problems as flavored ice pops, and it usually comes in a larger serving, so beware of too many empty calories and artificial flavors.

However, Heller suggests a fun way to make your own and serve at cookouts. All it takes is some partially-frozen, 100 percent fruit juice, she says. Throw it in a blender and toss in your favorite chopped fruit.

Flickr photo by Benimoto

  • Ice Cream Sandwich

Depending on the brand, especially if that sandwich is made with cookies, this treat can run high in fat and added sugar. Zied suggests having just a small piece of one, if it's really what you're craving.

"Just because you're given a whole ice cream sandwich doesn't mean you have to have the whole thing," she says. "Cut it up into little pieces and share," she suggests. "You can savor it a little bit more that way."

Heller points out that many brands will also contain trans fats in the wafers. If you're able to examine the package, keep an eye out for any partially hydrogenated oils or palm oil, she says, which many manufacturers are using now instead of trans fats. They have been linked to heart disease in some research.

Flickr photo by roland

  • Non-Dairy Frozen Treats

"Organic, all-natural, gluten-free, vegan -- we assume these mean healthy, and that's absolutely not always the case," says Heller. Still, if you're opting to forgo dairy for health or diet reasons, there are more choices than ever before. "If you can't have dairy, there are other options that are equivalent in many ways," says Zied, "but they may not be lower in calories, they may have just as much added sugar. Don't be under a delusion that you're saving much unless you look at the packages and compare them," she says.

The fun-sized Tofutti Cuties are a perfect example, she says. They provide a tasty, dairy-free option for those who need it, but at 130 calories, and with sugar and corn syrup as the second and third ingredients, these bites are still comparable, health-wise, to a dairy ice cream sandwich.

Flickr photo by JoeInSouthernCA

Obama honors fallen troops on Memorial Day

Standing in front of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, President Barack Obama commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

    By NBC's Ali Weinberg

Updated at 3:38 p.m. ET: WASHINGTON --?Speaking at a hallowed site for fallen warriors on Memorial Day, President Barack Obama hailed the winding down of two wars, adding that the country needs to honor its returning veterans as well as those friends and family for whom trips to military graves are a bittersweet routine.?

"These 600 acres are home to Americans from every part of the country who gave their lives in every part of the globe," the president said at Arlington National Cemetery, after taking part in the traditional laying of a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

?Whenever revolution needed to be waged and a union needed to be saved, they left their homes and took up arms for the sake of an idea," Obama said. ?They rest here together side by side, row by row, because each of them loved this country and everything it stands for, more than life itself."

In Washington, President Barack Obama honors those who fought in the Vietnam War. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.?

The president added that it is his obligation and that of all commanders in chief to send soldiers into harm?s way only with a clear mission.

Addressing families of the fallen at the cemetery?s amphitheater, the president said, ?After a decade under the dark cloud of war, we can see the light of a new day on the horizon,? a line he has used recently to tout the end of combat missions in Iraq and a gradual drawdown in Afghanistan.

But, he continued, ?especially for those who lost a loved one, this chapter will remain open long after the guns have fallen silent.?

He said that Americans should remember the individual stories of heroes who reflect the collective experience and sacrifice of the armed forces.

?One thing we can do is remember these heroes as you remember them: not just as a rank or a number or a name on a headstone, but as Americans, often far too young, who are guided by a deep and abiding love for their families, for each other and for this country,? the president said.

The nation pauses to honor fallen troops.

He recalled an Air Force pilot who met his wife on an aircraft carrier, an accountant who joined the military to do something ?more meaningful with his life,? and a young man who just days before he was killed in action told his father how formidable his fellow Marines were.

The president said that to honor these soldiers and their loved ones ?who carry a special weight? on their hearts, America can ?strive to be a nation worthy of your sacrifice; a nation that is fair and equal, peaceful and free.??

He suggested that part of that goal is the responsible deployment of troops only when necessary, which he said he takes to heart.

?As Commander in Chief, I can tell you that sending our troops into harm's way is the most wrenching decision that I have to make. I can promise you I will never do so unless it's absolutely necessary,? he said.

?And that when we do, we must give our troops a clear mission and the full support of a grateful nation,? he continued.

    'Serving your country with valor'
Later Monday, the president commemorated the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War with a visit to that conflict?s memorial on the National Mall.

More than 2,000 Vietnam veterans and family members of soldiers who died were invited to Monday's ceremony marking the beginning of a 13-year program to honor those who served in the Vietnam War and educate later generations about the war.

Standing in front of the veterans and families in the sweltering heat,?Obama said that the ungrateful reception given to many returning Vietnam veterans was a ?national shame, a disgrace that should have never happened.?

?You were often blamed for a war you didn't start when you should have been commended for serving your country with valor,? he said.

?He cited some of the policies his administration is pursuing, including disability benefits, more job opportunities and increased mental health resources as steps the country can take to ensure veterans are always given the respect and appreciation they deserve.

??Let's resolve to take care of our veterans as well as they've taken care of us. Not just talk but action. Not just in the first five years after a war but the first five decades,? he said.

After he spoke, the president laid a wreath at the memorial along with Rose Marie Sabo-Brown, the widow of Army Specialist Leslie Sabo, who recently received the Medal of Honor for his valor during the Vietnam War.

Military aircraft flew overhead as Obama walked back from laying the wreath, holding Sabo-Brown?s hand, and the ceremony came to a close.
