Drinking, hockey and driving don't mix - New Hamburg Independent

I am disturbed about what I?ve seen in the parking lot of the Wilmot Recreation Complex.

As is the norm now, the parking lot is constantly packed and full of activity related to ongoing hockey games. A few weeks ago, as we were walking from the parking lot to the swimming pool for lessons, I observed two men openly consuming cans of beer. The open case was lying fully visible in the back of their SUV.

They were not trying to conceal anything at all and were carrying on conversations with various folks who walked past them. Naively, I assumed they were going to head indoors to watch the rest of the game after they were done. I was wrong. Less than an hour later, as we were returning to our vehicle to leave, the involved parties and vehicle were gone from the lot.

They were driving in our community and under the influence.

I thought this was an isolated incident, however, less than a week later when I again graced the parking lot of the WRC for another activity, I exited my parked vehicle only to see crushed beer cans splayed out in the parking lot, at the opposite end from where I?d been a few days before.

The link between hockey and beer/alcohol is tight. I get it. But drinking and driving cannot be intertwined.

PLEASE don?t do it. Wait until you get home to consume that desperate drink. Don?t put our lives and our children at risk.
