?The Man With the Iron Fists? Review | Vlizz Entertainment

The Man With the Iron Fists ReviewThe Man With the Iron Fists?is a film ripe with style, but lacking in substance.

Produced by Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction) and written by Eli Roth (Hostel)?and the RZA (Wu-Tang Clan), the film centers around a blacksmith, an englishman, and a clan of warriors battling over a fortune in gold.

From the opening credits, it is difficult to tell whether the film is a homage to the films of the Shaw Brothers or a parody of them; the credits (written in Chinese) move up and down as if they were being projected on shoddy film stock. ?RZA?s script offers up, in addition to some genuinely funny moments, several corny lines that are presented with no sense of irony. His direction is just as over-the-top.

The draw of films like this, however, are the action sequences, which are choreographed very well, and would be great fights if the editing were just as good. ?RZA shoots the fights in close-up and the editor intercuts between actions quickly (an all-too-common practice while editing fight scenes). ?Aside from this, RZA mostly shoots in the style of classic kung fu films with striking color schemes of red, white, and gold. ?A particularly good-looking set-piece takes place in a brothel called the Pink Lotus.

The acting is mostly serviceable, with the exception of RZA, who also stars in his pet-project. He always looks like he?s about to fall asleep on screen. ?Russell Crowe (Gladiator) seems to be having the most fun in his role as a mercurial englishman: one moment a proper gentleman, and the next a bloodthirsty maniac. ?Crowe is the highlight of the movie.

The Man With the Iron Fists seems to have been made with the best intentions but comes across as a silly, misguided homage to classic Kung Fu films.
