The personal computer has dominated modern life for 25 years, but the often bulky devices are increasingly giving way to smaller, lighter smartphones and tablet computers. The whole sector is scrambling to survive the avalanche set off by Apple under its late founder, Steve Jobs. Technology giant Hewlett-Packard, whose business is still built on personal computers and printers, this week announced it would slash its payroll by 27,000 workers, or 8 percent, by 2014 to eventually save at least 3 billion dollars a year. Managers were admitting to Wall Street that HP?s future was as a smaller company.
The world?s largest PC manufacturer has so far failed to connect with consumer demand for smartphones and tablets ? a new technology landscape of slender mobile devices dominated by Silicon Valley?s Apple and South Korea?s Samsung. A world of mobile computing appears to have only a small space left for Hewlett-Packard, as well as PC competitor Dell, which has suffered shrinking sales recently. Both have failed to achieve the innovations to make a successful transition. As early as 2010, when he launched the iPad, Jobs talked about the ?post-PC world.?
Other manufacturers did not take his vision seriously, and they continued to make their big desktop machines and laptops. One of their biggest innovations was to make PCs in colours other than the old ?computer grey.? In time, Jobs was vindicated. ?Today, Apple is reinventing the phone,? he said in 2007, as he launched the iPhone. At the time, it sounded like an exaggeration, but the cellphone with a touch-sensitive screen set new standards for performance and appearance. Above all, the iPhone redefined the industry, because for the first time it brought to the fore not the device but the software it holds: the apps. At the start of 2010, Jobs dealt a definitive blow to the PC: he launched Apple?s tablet computer, the iPad. With it, the company again achieved a resounding success.
Over the past quarter alone, 35 million iPhones have been sold, along with close to 12 million iPads. By comparison, based on the data of market research firm Gartner, 89 million PCs were sold over the same period by all manufacturers put together. PC firms tried to come up with their own tablets, well before Apple did. More than 10 years ago in Las Vegas, Microsoft founder Bill Gates presented his vision of the digital table computer. The smartphone, too, is hardly Jobs? invention. However, alternative devices were too expensive, inconvenient or just too ugly to become bestsellers. Now, little is left for PC manufacturers to do but chase Apple and try not to miss the train altogether. Some of them continue to focus, successfully, on the traditional PC market, like the Chinese company Lenovo, whose boss Yang Yuanqing likes to talk of a ?PC-plus era.? A big fish like Hewlett-Packard, however, can hardly change overnight.
For years, the US giant worked on perfecting its business of selling computers, complementing them with extras like printers and offering services for such equipment. It was a perfect long-term relationship with customers, or so HP managers thought. HP reached the top of the industry 10 years ago through the expensive purchase of rival PC maker Compaq. Change within the sector, however, threw them off balance. Their hardware sales dropped, their software business failed to grow fast enough, payment for acquisitions like security service provider SonicWall was still pending. Prospects are good once the payroll is reduced, and share prices rose more than 3 per cent Thursday. While Apple is surfing the mobile wave with the iPhone and iPad and setting trends in the notebook computer market with the MacBook, Hewlett-Packard does not even have smartphones and tablets on offer. HP bought the smartphone pioneer Palm in 2010, but the management opted to close the company soon afterward, because it was uncompetitive. ?dpa

Andy Samberg Says His 'SNL' Departure Is 'Open-Ended'

Now that Kristen Wiig has officially left "Saturday Night Live," many fans are wondering what the deal is with Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis, who are both rumored to be leaving the show ahead of its fall season premiere.
It seems that fans will have to wait a bit longer to find out. When MTV News caught up with Samberg during MTV Sneak Peek Week, where he sat down to chat about his new film, "That's My Boy," he explained that he's got some time before he needs to give boss Lorne Michaels his two weeks' notice.
"You know, I've just been focusing on the movie and all this stuff," he explained to MTV News. "I haven't talked to Lorne about it yet. Something will get decided over the summer. We'll see. No matter what, it's been a dream come true working there for me."
"I don't know yet. But it was a fun season," he later added during his Sneak Peek chat. "It was a crazy finale. Mick Jagger and Arcade Fire and Foo Fighters. It's open-ended at this time."
Samberg, who hosted the MTV Movie Awards in 2009, sat down with MTV News ahead of this year's show. The 2012 show will be hosted by Russell Brand and feature performances by Fun., the Black Keys, Martin Solveig and Wiz Khalifa. It all goes down from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, live on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET.

A study conducted at the University of Granada has concluded that most immigrant women who give birth in Spain suffer "severe stress" and should receive psychological treatment after giving birth to help them overcome disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder, phobic anxiety, depression or psychoticism. These disorders are caused by "the stress of labor itself combined with other personal stress factors. This is a very stressful moment in women's life due to biological, psychological and social factors".
This study has been conducted by Francisca Prez Ramrez and coordinated by Inmaculada Garca Garca and Isabel Peralta Ramrez at the University of Granada Department of Nursing. The study also revealed that immigrant women generally enter the pregnancy check-up program six weeks later than Spanish women, as they enter it at 12 weeks of gestation, while Spanish women start at 6-7 weeks. As a result, they undergo less ultrasound scans.
Francisca Prez explains that they found significant differences in immigrant women's attendance to childbirth classes. "Spanish women attend childbirth classes much more frequently than immigrant women, perhaps because these classes are held at work hours or because they are given in Spanish".
Irregular Situation
The primary author of this article explains that immigrant women may experience greater stress "due to the fact that they are illegal immigrants, so they believe that as soon as they enter the hospital they will be deported, or the stress that Muslim women suffer when they have to ask for special food during their in-hospital stay, communication problems, or because they feel discriminated for wearing headscarf".
To carry out this study, 163 postpartum women were sampled between 2009 and 2011 at the University Hospital Virgen de las Nieves, Granada, Spain. All women -- immigrant women and 83 Spanish women were asked to answer four questionnaires. In addition, their medical records, partographs and midwifery records were examined.
The researchers analyzed participants' sociodemographic variables (age, country of origin, nationality, years of residence in Spain, administrative status); health habits (smoking, previous diseases); habits related with obstetric formula (number of pregnancies and miscarriages); factors related with current pregnancy (check- ups and ultrasound scans underwent)and newborn information (sex, birthweight, Apgar score at 1 and 5 minutes, or feeding method). Values for optimism, vulnerability to stress and perceived stress were obtained by personal interviews.
In the light of the results of this study, the researcher notes that "we should understand the cultural factors interfering immigrant pregnant women's experiences, and include respect for diversity of beliefs and values in postnatal care.
The results of this study will be partially published in Journal of Transcultural Nursing, Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem and Anales de Psicologa.

Stammering is already a very confusing phenomena: scientists are still working to find out a comprehensive theory of causation. Common man just cant get over the variability: But he was speaking fine just now.. What happened suddenly? Everyone is confused.
This confusion is further spiced up by labels which make perfect sense to user but little objective understanding to the listener. For a long time, I thought that I am a "mild stammerer". Then, I read about "covert stammering", "Internalized stammering", "Synonym stammerer" etc.

Still later, I read Sheehan: His iceberg made sense in a very personal way. Stammering is not what we do with our mouth. 90% of the problem, core of the problem is how we FEEL about communication in general- and our speech in particular. All the inner emotions ("Pain body" a la Eckharte) of guilt, shame, fear, loneliness, excitement etc. really constitute what goes under the name of stammering.
That being the case, how do we categorise people's stammering difficulties? Someone may speak fine in most situations but may have HUGE emotional baggage related to communication, relationships, commitment etc. May be quite disabled socially. Should we call it "mild stammering"?
Another pws may have difficulty on every second word but is totally "un-ashamed" and goes ahead and speaks at every opportunity: should we label him Severe stutterer? I am sure you begin to see what I am driving at.
Another problem: when we say, I am a mild stammerer, we are also implying: I dont need to address the issue now; it can wait. Let me deal with other "important" things in life first. Also, whenever I do work on it, I dont need to work that hard, that long, that consistently..
?Can you see the tricks our mind plays on us? Why? simply because mind wants no change. Change is uncomfortable. Status quo is familiar and comfortable. An entire life can be spent this way. I spent forty years like this! And I thought I was a very intelligent person!
So, friends, wake up- take charge and deal with whatever is bothering you- stammering or whatever. Here and now.
PS: How would you react if a court gave verdict like this: He is guilty of mild murder. Or Vigilance bureau said- Mr XYZ is guilty of mild bribery, extortion and embezzlement..

The first chemical circuit developed

The Organic Electronics research group at Link?ping University previously developed ion transistors for transport of both positive and negative ions, as well as biomolecules. Tybrandt has now succeeded in combining both transistor types into complementary circuits, in a similar way to traditional silicon-based electronics.
An advantage of chemical circuits is that the charge carrier consists of chemical substances with various functions. This means that we now have new opportunities to control and regulate the signal paths of cells in the human body.
"We can, for example, send out signals to muscle synapses where the signalling system may not work for some reason. We know our chip works with common signalling substances, for example acetylcholine," says Magnus Berggren, Professor of Organic Electronics and leader of the research group.
The development of ion transistors, which can control and transport ions and charged biomolecules, was begun three years ago by Tybrandt and Berggren, respectively a doctoral student and professor in Organic Electronics at the Department of Science and Technology at Link?ping University. The transistors were then used by researchers at Karolinska Institutet to control the delivery of the signalling substance acetylcholine to individual cells. The results were published in the well-known interdisciplinary journal PNAS.
In conjunction with Robert Forchheimer, Professor of Information Coding at LiU, Tybrandt has now taken the next step by developing chemical chips that also contain logic gates, such as NAND gates that allow for the construction of all logical functions.
His breakthrough creates the basis for an entirely new circuit technology based on ions and molecules instead of electrons and holes.

Beware of Debt Relief Scams - Married (with Debt)

Otherwise you likely represent a sliver of the $21.3 billion in credit that consumers accrued in March alone, according to the Federal Reserve. Whether you?ve paid off debt or spent too much this year, $21.3 billion in consumer credit better get your attention, because it undoubtedly got the attention of debt relief scammers.
With such a drastic monthly increase in consumer credit, scammers will try to prey on desperate consumers. Arm yourself with knowledge against these unscrupulous capitalists by following some of these tips.
Explore every option
The easiest way to avoid a debt relief scam? Don?t use a debt settlement or consolidation service. If you can get out of debt yourself?which likely means it?s not an exorbitant amount of money?then do so. You don?t need a third party.
Do your research
Once you decide to go with a debt relief service, get busy learning everything you can about the business. The National Business Reporting Bureau, Yelp and the Better Business Bureau should provide you with some insight on the business? reputation. Also, the Internet is a wealth of knowledge, especially when it comes to disgruntled customers.
Take any negative review as a red flag. When a business or service is advising you on how to handle your money, there is no room for risk taking. Ask friends and family if they ever used a favorable service, too.
Spot a scam
Cease contact with a debt relief company if it:
- Doesn?t tell you about the debt consolidation or settlement process as it?s being done
- Suggests you stop paying creditors
- Charges a large fee upfront. Charging advance fees before actually providing a debt relief service is illegal in some states.
- Requires personal ID information?such as Social Security number or bank account number?before offering a quote
Use common sense and go with your instincts. Don?t enter into any agreements without first knowing what you?re getting into. As soon as you feel uncomfortable with a company for any reason, walk away.
Know when it?s too good to be true
Fraudulent debt relief services boast that they?ll have you debt free in weeks or that their success rate is almost 100 percent. Worse yet, a company might claim they ?know people? or ?have connections? that somehow eliminates your debt.
Don?t fall for it. These claims are simply ploys to attract consumers. Unfortunately, these work on desperate consumers who contributed to the overwhelming amount of debt accrued in March.
Be inquisitive and read carefully
As with any written agreement, before you sign, read it thoroughly. The tinier the print, the better you should understand it. If there?s any vague phrasing, ask for a detailed explanation. Terms and conditions of a fraudulent company are likely to stand out to you. Keep in mind that even a well-established company might toss something in your agreement that could further hurt your finances.
Final thought
Ideally you?d never need a debt relief service, but it could happen. Auto loans, mortgage payments and credit card bills can add up quick. However, the best defense against a debt relief scammer is staying out of insurmountable debt.
If you ever need help consolidating or settling debt, then keep in mind the above pointers to avoid being a victim.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? The son of Malcolm X's biographer is asking Syracuse University to hand over a letter in which the slain activist writes about his shifting views on race relations, claiming his family is the rightful owner.
Malcolm X wrote to Alex Haley, his collaborator for "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," from Saudi Arabia in April 1964, about ten months before he was gunned down at a New York City hotel ballroom. The publisher of the autobiography later gave the letter to Syracuse University as part of a larger cache of papers to be used by researchers.
But Haley's son, William Haley, said the publisher never had legal title to the letter and could not give it away. His lawyer said Tuesday he plans to make a legal demand this week for the letter, which he believes is worth at least $650,000.
"The history is important for us as a family, the legacy," William Haley said. Haley said he was acting on behalf of himself and his two sisters. Haley said it's possible the family would decide to sell the letter, but that would be a group decision.
Alex Haley died in 1992.
"So much of African-American history gets lost and is sometimes not in the place where we prefer it to be," Haley said.
Malcolm X's letter, written after a pilgrimage to Mecca, addresses the recent time he spent with Muslims "whose skin was the whitest of white."
"In fact, what I have seen and experienced on this pilgrimage has forced me to 're arrange' much of my thought patterns, and to toss aside some of my previous conclusions," he wrote.
The letter was sent to publisher Grove Press for inclusion in the autobiography, which was first published in 1965. Grove included the letter in files it gave to Syracuse University in 1969.
Sean M. Quimby, senior director of the university's Special Collections Research Center, said it has documentation from Grove that shows Syracuse owns the transferred archive. He said the school's ownership had never been challenged before in 43 years and he has not seen any evidence that the letter was lent, instead of given, to Grove.
"Our library and our special collections are publicly available to anyone, and there is a greater good served," Quimby added.
Haley's attorney, Gregory J. Reed of Detroit, said Haley passed along the letter to Grove only so it could be included in the autobiography and that Grove never had legal title.
Haley said he is acting now because he only found out about details of the letter recently after talking to Reed, who collects Malcolm X material.

- 4 cups whole wheat macaroni noodles

- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- 1/4 cup dijon mustard
- 2-3 celery stalks, sliced (I like my vegetables a little stockier, but you could dice finely as well)
- 1 medium sized onion, diced (I would go with a yellow or white variety, but you could also use red onions for a spicier salad)
- 2 -3 carrots, sliced thin
- 1/3 cup sugar (I just use regular old sugar, but for a healthier version, you could experiment with different kinds of sweeteners. I wouldn?t skip this ingredient, however, because it really does give the dish a tangy flavor)
- Sea salt and pepper to taste
Boil a pot of water and add pasta. Whole wheat pasta might take a little longer than regular pasta to soften.
Drain pasta and set aside.
In a large bowl, mix vegan mayo, vinegar, dijon mustard, sugar, salt and pepper.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? Isaac Lamb acknowledges that his five-minute, block-long choreographed build-up to a marriage proposal has upped the stakes for everyone who follows.
"Guys, I'm sorry," he said on NBC's "Today" show Tuesday. "That wasn't my intention."
The Portland-area thespian's creative proposal last week to girlfriend Amy Frankel featured about 60 people dancing on a small street near his parents' home. Video of the performance (http://apne.ws/M3Jmex ) has gone viral, notching more than 6 million YouTube hits so far.
Lamb is pitching it as the world's first lip-synched proposal, and there don't appear to be any challengers.
The video begins with Lamb's brother putting headphones over Frankel's ears as she sits facing out the back of an SUV, her legs dangling over the rear bumper.
"This song tends to exemplify you and Isaac's relationship to me," the brother tells her, and there begins Bruno Mars' sugar-pop, up-tempo ballad "Marry You."
The car starts moving and two of the couple's friends roll into the frame, then a few more. It was nothing that seemed too out of the ordinary, Frankel told NBC's "Today." She and Lamb are actors and are used to elaborate stunts.
Frankel thought: "Oh, they're doing something with Isaac's family," she told the show. "There's seven of them. This is so sweet."
A second camera ? the one that gives the video its emotional heft ? is perched above Frankel's face, capturing her reaction. It shows her as she crosses her hands on her chest, shakes her head, giggles and swoons.
The proposal is elaborate but not expensive, choreographed but not constrained. In this city where the television show "Portlandia" suggested young people go to retire, most of the dancers in the video look like they fell off the bus from central casting headed for its set.
For all the pageantry, though, the proposal itself was pretty simple.
"You have already given me a lifetime of happiness," Lamb tells Frankel when the music stops. "Will you let me spend the rest of my life trying to give you the same? Will you marry me?"
She nods, and they kiss as a man in the background wearing a marching-band costume wipes away a tear.
Lamb's proposal is not the first wedding-themed video to go viral. Jill and Kevin's wedding entrance dance from 2009 set the standard for matrimonial cool and ? at 75 million online views ? spawned countless imitators.
The song Lamb picked, on its face, sounds ideal ? "Marry You" is a kind of proposal. Except its lyrics say: "It's a beautiful night. We're looking for something dumb to do." And they round out with: "Who cares if we're trashed, got a pocket full of cash we can blow. Shots of Patron, and it's on."
Asked on "Today" about her favorite moment of the dance routine, Frankel said it was when she first saw Lamb appear on the street.
"When they all parted, and there was Isaac," she said. "That was the first time I think I took a breath."

Buying a student property as an investment can be a wise move, but would-be investors should do their homework carefully before diving in.
From an investment perspective, Goslett says that units within a secure complex generally show a healthy return on investment over the long term. He also notes that buying a property that appeals to a broader spectrum of buyers, such as young singles and couples and not just students will not restrict the property in terms of capital growth.
As long as there are universities, there will be a need for student accommodation, says Adrian Goslett, CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa. He says that privately owned off-campus student housing is always in demand, so investors looking for a rental property with a constant influx of tenants will find them near institutions for higher learning.
Sectional-title units that are located in secure complexes within close proximity to a university campus as well as other amenities are particularly sought-after among students across the country, Goslett says.
?For many South African students and their parents, the idea of living within walking distance of their university and having the safety aspect of staying in a secure complex is appealing.?
In many cases universities will list off-campus accommodation on free property listings that are handed out to their students who cannot be accommodated on the premises. ?Some tertiary institutions can have 40-page waiting lists of students needing housing, and as such, there is always a strong demand for rental units within the area.?

Goslett advises property investors who want to purchase student accommodation to consider the following:
1. Research properties for sale within walking distance from the university and obtain comparable prices for similar properties in the region from an estate agent specialising in that area. Consider elements such as security, parking and access to public transport services.
2. Consult with university housing officials and find out the current rental rates for students. Determine possible profit or loss by taking the rental amount and deducting expenses such as the bond repayment, rates and taxes, insurance, general maintenance costs, repairs and any other expenses.
3. Ask an attorney or real estate professional to review all contracts and agreements, also consult a tax advisor about the tax consequences of investing in student accommodation.
4. In many cases buying property can be much easier than managing the property and tenants. Determine who will manage the property and consider appointing a professional rental management agent, which can be considered a cost-effective and efficient solution to managing a rental property.
5. Apply the same risk management principles that apply to other rental properties. Set ground rules and have an agreement with regard to what is acceptable tenant behaviour, sign a legally valid lease agreement, secure a deposit and agree on breakage costs.
6. Inspect the property on a regular basis at a time that suits the tenant. Establish and maintain an emergency fund to cover any unexpected repairs and expenses on the property.
7. Advertise the property from September onwards as this is the time of year parents normally start looking for student accommodation.
Goslett ?says as with any property purchase decision, it is important for investors to do their research. ?Buying the right kind of property and having a management strategy in place can make purchasing a student housing property a viable income-generating investment.?
