New law better informs breast cancer patients

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- Beginning August 1, if you are diagnosed with breast cancer, a new Alabama law requires that you be informed of all your treatment options.

The Breast Cancer Patient Education Act of 2013 requires the Alabama Department of Public Health to develop standardized information for breast cancer patients about the treatment options available to them. Doctors are then required to pass that information along to their patients.

The law also requires a breakdown of breast reconstruction alternatives and insurance coverage available to treatments.

A second portion of the law requires physicians issuing a mammography report to notify patients if they have dense breast tissue. Women with dense breast tissue have a higher risk of breast cancer, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

You can find a link to more information about your breast cancer treatment options right here.

Cops: 4 men found held in 'deplorable' Texas home

HOUSTON (AP) -- Four men found living in "deplorable conditions" in a Houston garage on Friday told police that they were being held captive after being lured by promises of food and cigarettes so that their captor could cash their public-assistance checks, authorities said.

Three of the men were malnourished and taken to a hospital after being discovered by officers responding to a 911 call about the home, Houston police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said. Sgt. Steven Murdock described the living conditions as like a "dungeon."

Investigators were still trying to determine how long the men lived there, but they said it may have been weeks.

Silva said the men told investigators they were forced to live in the garage - which included just one chair, no bed and a possibly malfunctioning air conditioner - so their captor could cash their assistance checks. She said the men were "given scraps to eat."

"They clearly stated to us they were being kept against their will," Silva said.

Silva said one person has been detained but no charges have been filed. He apparently did not live in the house, she said. Four women were also found living in the house, three of whom appeared to have mental disabilities, Silva said. She described the other woman as a caretaker. Unlike the garage, she described the living conditions inside the home as more normal.

A neighbor called authorities Friday morning expressing concern about men in the house in North Houston. Murdock, the police sergeant, said at least one of the men is a military veteran. He described them as malnourished and "almost invalids," saying they lived in "deplorable conditions."

Alberta Ewing, whose brother lives next door, said the men looked "very weak" and were hauled out on stretchers by paramedics. She said one of the men had approached her asking for help just weeks earlier during a Fourth of July gathering, but that she didn't take him seriously because he wasn't crying and she couldn't get him to explain further.

"He said, `Could you help me?'" Ewing recalled. "I said, `What's the problem?"

Neighbors said they occasionally saw the men sitting outside. Virginia Rogers, who lives five houses away, said she greeted them with a wave when she drove by.

"I'm shocked," Rogers said. "I'm baffled. I didn't have a clue."

The men were found in a working-class, residential neighborhood of one-story, brick homes. Harris County property records show the home was built in 1969 and is about 1,400 square feet.

Police were going in and out of the house's bright purple door and black gate Friday afternoon, removing evidence as neighbors stood outside watching.

A portion of the block was cordoned off with police tape.

Texas Six Flags Rollercoaster Fall Kills Woman

A woman has died after falling from the tallest steel-hybrid roller-coaster in the world.

The accident happened at the Six Flags Over Texas theme park in Arlington, Texas. Park officials confirmed the woman died but did not specify how she was killed.

However, witnesses said they saw the woman fall from the Texas Giant rollercoaster.

"She goes up like this, then when it drops to come down, that's when it (the safety bar) released and she just tumbled," said Carmen Brown who saw the accident happened.

Brown said she was next in line behind the woman and saw her being strapped into her seat next to her son.

"We heard her screaming. We were like, 'Did she just fall?'" Brown said.

Six Flags expressed sadness over the death and said it was temporarily closing the section of the park around the accident site.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this difficult time," the park said in a statement.

The Texas Giant is 14 storeys high, has a drop of 79 degrees and a bank of 95 degrees. It can carry up to 24 riders.

The ride first opened in 1990 as an all-wooden coaster but underwent a $10m (?6.54m) renovation in 2010 to install steel-hybrid rails before reopening in 2011.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is commending the work of a consumer protection agency created after the economic crisis.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau got its first permanent director this week after the Senate voted to install Richard Cordray after years of delay.

In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama says consumers can go to the agency to "get some measure of justice" when financial institutions disregard the rules.

He says the bureau has addressed more than 175,000 complaints and has helped recover more than $400 million in refunds for consumers.

In the Republican message, Reps. Todd Young of Indiana and Tim Griffin of Arkansas are calling on the Democratic-controlled Senate to vote on bills passed by the House to delay requirements on individuals and businesses by Obama's health care law.

What if This Climbing Champion Were Trayvon? ? Beyond the Edge

Climbing phenom Kai Lightner; Photograph courtesy Travis Wills

The acquittal of George Zimmerman should not escape the interest of the outdoor recreation community. Like most of us I couldn?t immediately assign any relevance to the horrible death of Trayvon Martin and the world of adventure, but there are indeed several pertinent factors to consider when a gunman masquerading as a ?neighborhood watch volunteer? stalks, confronts, and kills an unarmed teenager as he walked home alone in the rain. A jury of his peers declared Zimmerman not guilty of 2nd degree murder and manslaughter. Under current Florida law justice, as they say, was served. But it wasn?t until I witnessed the reaction of a friend, the African-American mother of a 13-year-old rock climbing prodigy, that I put into perspective for me the genuine tragedy of this crime that will go unpunished.

My specialty in outdoor recreation not withstanding, as a person of color, the particular nature of this case demands from me a thoughtful response. As a writer of travel and adventure stories, I believe that at the heart of this topic is the reasonable expectation of free thinking people to safely venture from one place to another without fear of someone believing that they might be ?up to no good.? The outdoor industry is all about getting people to journey outside their comfort zone and explore the unknown. And though this case might seem to have nothing to do with outdoor recreation I believe that those of us in the business should take a look at the implications of what just happened in our society.

Though we could have learned from Trayvon?s death, as a society, that you can?t judge people by their appearance and take lethal action because you feel that you?re being threatened when no real risk exists. Instead black mothers and fathers are being made to caution their children, especially their sons, to fear those they encounter as people who might do them harm. I?m concerned that their fear will inhibit African-American youth from venturing to places or seeking out experiences where they believe for whatever reason that they don?t belong.

In recent weeks I?ve had the pleasure of getting to know Kai Lightner. At 13, he?s doing amazing things in the world of sport climbing. This spring Kai successfully ascended Southern Smoke (5.14c) and Transworld Depravity (5.14a) two particularly hard sport routes in the Red River Gorge of Kentucky. On the same two-week road trip, he climbed Proper Soul (5.14a) in the New River Gorge, West Virginia. I wrote about him in the August/September issue of Rock & Ice Magazine. And just last week Kai took his fourth champion title at the national Sport Climbing Series in Atlanta, Georgia. This summer he?ll climb for the U.S. in the Youth World Sport Climbing Championship in Vancouver, British Columbia.

?I?ve waited a long time for this,? Kai told me in a phone conversation. ?Ever since I started climbing I?ve always wanted to be in a world championship. The fact that I get to compete in it now is really overwhelming.?

With the support of his mother my friend Constance Lightner, a professor of Management Science at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina, Kai is on track to fulfill the fondest dream of his young life. After many years of hard work and discipline he?s earned the respect of his coaches, teammates, fellow competitors and a growing number of journalists. Smart, articulate, polite and a straight-A student this young climber epitomizes the very best that America?s youth has to offer. Kai is a fine individual to present his country in a world-class competition. But unfortunately these are character traits that many outside of the climbing community will fail to see. Kai Lightner is black.

Just a few months ago while traveling through Washington, D.C. on one of many weekend road trips to train at a climbing gym far from their home Kai and his mom Connie stopped at a gas station to refuel and use the restroom. On the way out of the facilities an attendant accosted Kai. This complete stranger, pulled up his shirt, frisked him and accused him of stealing. With no evidence of wrongdoing the boy was released to run back to his car, reduced to tears.

?Anyone that knows my son knows that he is a mild mannered, respectful kid, that?s always maintained an A average in school,? Connie recounted on Facebook. ?Despite these facts, his physical attributes (race and size) in the past have typecast him.?

Like the parents of many black children Connie has taught Kai from a young age to comport himself in a manner void of anything that may be perceived as aggressive or threatening. Tall for his age but slightly built, like a climber, it?s hard to imagine Kai as anything but gentle and kind. More than just being polite and respectful, as all children should be, Kai is learning how not to draw the attention of people who will make assumptions of who he is based exclusively on the color his skin. It?s these people who will ascribe to this talented young man all manner of horrible attributes and character deficiencies and perceive him as a threat, people like George Zimmerman. Had this been Florida or any of more than 25 other states with a so called ?stand your ground law? Kai Lightner might have been Trayvon Martin.

?As the mom of an African American boy, incidents like the gas station and the Martin case scare me,? Connie wrote on Facebook. ?Do I tell my son to defend himself if he feels threatened? To run? I understand that for some, if you have never experienced similar scenarios, you may not understand. For me, it?s not anger, it?s fear.?

And now she can add to that fear a very real possibility. Should her child ever be injured or even killed by a person carrying a gun who feels threatened by a black teenager minding his own business that person will be acquitted of the crime. Where Connie as a mother feels fear, as a black man I feel anger. I?m angry because there are too many people out there who would look at Kai and never assume that he?s an A-student and a national sport-climbing champion. Among the first African-Americans ever to represent the US in a world climbing competition, Kai could just as easily be targeted as suspicious or as a threat while traveling between events or training venues simply because of his appearance. It?s heartbreaking to know that we live in a nation where people with guns can be allowed to shoot first and ask questions later.

But Connie takes comfort in the fact that Kai has always been supported and encouraged throughout his career as a climber. Since the age of seven he?s had every opportunity to excel in the sport he loves.? ?I am fortunate that my son is surrounded by a rock climbing community that has never seen race,? Connie wrote. ?Despite being a predominantly white sport, he has never felt different or outcast despite the fact that he is usually the only black person at events. My fear is that outside of this community, his reality is very different.?

That?s likely true of most African-American youth. It?s possible though that many might find that same safe and supportive place among the community of climbers and adventurers as Kai did. As I have. I can?t help but wonder what it would take to bring more African-American youth into the relative safety of the outdoor community.

The outdoor industry can take a great deal of pride in having created an even playing field where anyone with the will, courage, and determination to succeed can accomplish anything he or she desires. ?Over the past weeks several African-American climbers on two teams made a valiant attempt to summit Mount McKinley, also known as Denali the highest peak in North America. As they waited for a weather window to open at their 14,000-foot Advanced Base Camp there were likely more black climbers on the mountain at one time than ever before.

The Expedition Denali team, organized by the National Outdoor Leadership School brought nine black climbers ranging in age between 19 and 56. Their course instructors included Chicago-born backcountry ski guide Robby ReChord, one of only three African-American NOLS field educators of more than 800 world-wide. The other team, lead by world-class mountaineer and climbing team captain for The North Face Conrad Anker, included ReChord?s mentor NOLS instructor Philip Henderson and North Face snowboard ambassador Ryan Hudson, both black. Photographs taken throughout those days on Denali demonstrate the capacity of the outdoor industry to welcome and engage people of color in such a way that reflects their individual character and natural ability to perform. Unfortunately, a massive electrical storm just 700 feet from the summit forced both teams along with 40 other climbers to retreat back to Advanced Base Camp. Certainly the environment does not discriminate.

Following the example of NOLS and the North Face the makers of outdoor equipment and clothing as well as outfitting companies, retailers and environmental protection groups have an opportunity to demonstrate the supportive and inclusive nature of the industry as a whole. From the outside looking in this mostly white environment might appear threatening to anyone who is unaware just how inviting it can be. Lately we?ve been talking a lot about diversity and how important it is to reach out to more people of color. Now is the perfect time to make serious strides toward that goal.

It would help if we started by investing a few more marketing dollars to directly connect with minority communities, segments of the population that will soon be the majority. We could begin encouraging more companies to offer cultural competency training for outdoor professionals who work with the general public. And industry media organizations can try to include more images that depict people of color enjoying time outside. I believe that if we make a sincere effort to show ourselves as welcoming and inviting we would attract and retain more talented kids like Kai.

In many ways, the rarified world of rock climbing, mountaineering, and other adventure sports has the same unwelcoming appearance of the gated community where Trayvon was gunned down. But as recent events have shown appearances can be deceiving. In sharing her story Connie wants people to know that her son has found a safe environment in which to thrive, and she hopes that other children like hers will be encouraged to find themselves there as well.

Dear GYA, I just ? I just can?t handle it. I?m heartbroken over the Emmy snubs. How was John Slattery completely ignored? He was nominated for the first four seasons of Mad Men, and now nothing. He was amazing; Roger had more depth this season than any other. And Arrested Development was beaten out by The Big Bang Theory?! I mean, sure, Portia DeRossi didn?t look like herself, but the fourth season was still hilarious. I?ve been binge-watching all my favorite episodes, in hopes that somehow the nominations will be revised. Please tell me there is something going on worthy enough for me to tear myself away from my TV. ? Nathan Harvey, Sandy

NFL Star Turns Down Jay-Z, Falls Back On Joining Roc Nation Sports

News: NFL Star Turns Down Jay-Z, Falls Back On Joining Roc Nation Sports

Friday, Jul 19, 2013 8:30PM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

After recent reports claimed Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver DeSean Jackson was on the verge of signing to Roc Nation Sports, new reports claim he will not join Jay-Z's growing roster.

According to reports, Jackson has decided to hire the same agent responsible for fellow teammate Michael Vick.

After the release of his critically acclaimed (or something) single with Snoop Dogg, Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson apparently decided he didn't need Jay-Z after all. While speculation mounted that Jackson would sign with the rap mogul-turned-agent, Jackson has apparently chosen to go with established agent Joel Segal instead, according to Liz Mullen of Sports Business Journal. Segal also represents Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, whom Jackson has been supportive of recently. (NBC Sports)

Weeks after New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith joined Roc Nation, recent reports claimed Jackson wanted in on the opportunity.

Philadelphia Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson has fired agent Drew Rosenhaus and is considering hiring Jay-Z's Roc Nation, according to multiple reports. In March 2012, Jackson, after his fourth season with the Eagles, re-signed for $51 million over five years, $15 million of which was guaranteed through mostly the first two years of the contract. But Jackson has told teammates he is now hoping to strike a deal with Roc Nation Sports, according to USA Today Sports, which cited a source with knowledge of the situation. However, a source told ESPN.com's Darren Rovell that while it's possible that Jackson desires to be with Roc Nation Sports, to date there have not been any discussions between the two sides. Per NFL Players Association rules, Jackson must wait five days after filing agent-termination paperwork with the union before he begins talking to other agents about representation. (ESPN)

This week, Jigga said the creation of Roc Nation Sports will break old habits and lazy traditions set by sports agencies for years.

"Within two months we had Robinson Cano and Kevin Durant," Jay said in an interview referring to the New York Yankees and Oklahoma City Thunder superstars. "[The other companies,] they're fighting it. They're fighting it because it means you have to work now. You have to work now and they're not comfortable with that. They've been spending 15, 20 years just sitting back and collecting the check and now they have to get out, get up and they have to work and they have to care about these clients because they're going to see the work we're doing and say, 'Hold on, wait a second. Why am I not getting this sort of service? What are you doing? What have you been doing this week?' Those questions are going to start coming so they're intimidated by that. The fact that they have to work and they're intimidated by the fact their clients are going to want to come to us. But if they're doing a great job, there's no reason for any client to switch." (BBC Radio 1)

Jigga also said he believes Roc Nation Sports will ultimately make agents reconsider how much time and effort they put into their clients' careers.

"This is people's lives. They think they're going to hang around me because I'm famous but they can do that anyway. They don't have to sign to Roc Nation," Jay added. "Those two reasons. They think their clients are going to leave them. Their conscience is telling them, 'I'm not really earning a check. I'm not really earning,' because if you're confident and I know that I've done a great job, I have no fear of that because, I'm doing a great job. But their conscience is telling them, 'I'm not doing what I'm supposed to be doing and this is not cool that someone's around that is threatening to really do the job. So I really have to get up now.' ... Some guys sign and they never see the agent. They see them on the signing day and just never them [again]. And hoping to get fired because they have this tale that they still get paid. They're almost hoping to get fired." (BBC Radio 1)

To Keep this RP alive!!

I would be totally fine with just NPCing the hunter characters, honestly. I mean, at this point it would take a big group of them to overtake our group and I don't see them all getting captured and even if they did I wouldn't be sure where to take them or what to do with them as a hunter xD But I wouldn't mind setting off a few more boobytraps. Since it's just us, we could sorta rush for the 'safe' place... If it is even safe XD If it's not then when we get there I'll make a hunter to prison guard crap or whatever but otherwise I'm totally cool with just playing them as NPCs and triggering random traps.

I would even be okay with NPC playing some rogues, who aren't hunters- just bad people? Maybe even a bad warg?

'X-Files' stars Duchovny, Anderson tease 3rd film

"X-Files" stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reunited for the show's 20th anniversary panel at Comic-Con on Thursday in San Diego.

"X-Files" fans hoping for another movie sequel heard some good news at Thursday's 20th anniversary panel at Comic-Con.

Sort of.

Star David Duchovny, who played Agent Fox Mulder, said because the groundbreaking sci-fi series offered endless possibilities, "We could do it forever. I always thought when we can come back together, we will. As much as we can."

Gillian Anderson, who portrayed Mulder's initially skeptical partner Dana Scully, is game as long as their reunion doesn't happen on the small screen. "A film would be great."

Creator Chris Carter fell just short of confirming a third movie for the beloved franchise, but he said the devotion of Comic-Con's fans was "very inspirational."

"You need a reason to get excited about going on and doing it again, because it's hard, hard work. But this is very interesting," he said.

As far as the actors are concerned, production on the film began today after Anderson auctioned off a life-size cutout of Mulder and Scully to the audience for charity.

"This is how we're going to get the movie made, by the way," cracked Duchovny.

"This is our Kickstarter," responded Anderson.

The actress flirted with her co-star throughout the panel, expressing her eagerness to share a sex scene with his promiscuous character on "Californication."

"I didn't realize that Mulder was so cool until a few years later. And then I thought, 'Damn, I should've gotten there sooner," she said.

Duchovny, however, is more reluctant for the two to reteam in other roles.

"Sacred's a strong word," he said, "but there's something so special about Mulder and Scully ... it would have to be something that wouldn't cross the line between those two characters."

For the show's creator, the will-they-or-won't-they couple fell in love at first sight.

"I think it was when (Scully) first walked in (Mulder's) office in the basement," responded Carter when asked about the origins of the team's epic romance.

To the delight of fans, the product of their coupling made a surprise appearance: Producer John Shiban's son, who played Scully's baby as a newborn, appeared on stage at the urging of his dad.

"He looks like me," Anderson said, turning to Duchovny and saying, "That's our son."

97% A Hijacking

All Critics (73) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (71) | Rotten (2)

This isn't an action picture; it's a picture about the suspense and terror of inaction.

Gripping and tightly focused.

Lindholm rations the meat and potatoes of plot to keep us captive at the bargaining table. It's a sadistic ploy that produces a real payoff.

A Hijacking is one of those perfect films that crop up every few years to prove that with true artistry, even the most exhausted genre can yield something new, rich, and strange.

Lindholm justifies his confidence in a visual approach that's refreshingly realistic.

To refuse to call A Hijacking a thriller is not to say it isn't thrilling, in a dryly cerebral way.

A Hijacking is more about one incident than about how it relates universally, but in thoughtfully exploring the specifics and emotions of that incident, Lindholm is able to show how modern life sometimes seems devoid of any accord.

A lean, stressful nail-biter, smart, well-written, nicely shot and wonderfully performed.

[Omar and Mikkel are] like Marcus and McTeague in Frank Norris's 1899 novel, handcuffed to each other in a struggle that could well end in mutually assured destruction.

Tobias Lindholm's slow-burning thriller makes a bid for verisimilitude that extends well beyond the use of natural light and handheld cameras.

Though the acting in "A Hijacking" is superb, the film is strictly a "follow-the-dots" offering. This is not entertainment. It is another overwhelmingly depressing foray into corporate greed.

"A Hijacking", if eligible, is an early contender for Best Foreign film at the 2014 Academy Awards.

It's an effective piece of work that will leave you longing for a shower, a nap, and a warm meal.

It's a radical departure from any thriller in stateside theaters.

A nail-biter of the highest order, A Hijacking is astonishingly emotional, gritty, and terrifying -- a genuine directorial achievement that should not be missed.

When the gut-wrenching conclusion of A Hijacking comes in the form of a single, random act, it's only then you realize how far you've been pulled into its emotional core.

A Hijacking delivers all the thrills the title suggests, but in none of the places you'd expect them.

The danger never reaches the level of chaos, but the subtext and metaphor in the slow-moving humanistic commentary on the motivations and byproducts of capitalism make for an intriguing film.

A smart movie derived out of the small moments that collectively comprise the hostage experience, rather than grandiose gestures.

Sight Line Science: Candle in the Mirror

A Clear Science Illusion: A simple candle-lit trick can help demonstrate some complex optical principles while wowing onlookers in the process! Image: George Retseck

Introduction
Ever wonder why mirrors can make a room feel so much larger than it really is? Mirrors are so common that we rarely think of how intriguing they really are. They somehow take the three-dimensional world we live in and reproduce it so perfectly that we are subconsciously fooled into perceiving that another 3-D space exists beyond the mirror's surface. We know, of course, that this is just an illusion. But how do our brains get tricked by reflections? A simple activity with a candle will demonstrate some of the ways our brains get fooled.

Background
Visible objects fall into two general categories: luminous objects (such as your computer monitor) that emit their own light and illuminated objects (your keyboard, for instance) that reflect light emitted by other sources. Your eyes see objects by detecting either emitted or reflected light, and under most circumstances that light has to reach your eyes by traveling in a straight line. In other words, you usually need an unobstructed line of sight between yourself and any object you intend to view.

Mirrors and other highly reflective surfaces present a common exception to this rule. Most mirrors are made by layering a reflective metal backing behind a sheet of clear glass. Because the backing is so reflective, it provides an "image" (an apparent reproduction of visible objects). This sort of image can be deceptive because its apparent location doesn't match up with the actual, physical location of the object creating that image. Consider an image of a chair that you see in a mirror versus the real chair that you can see in the actual room if you have a direct line of sight to it.

So-called plane mirrors are even more mind-bending because the images they create are known as virtual images. These images are created when rays of light emitted or reflected by an object seem to converge somewhere behind the mirror. And some surfaces can act as mirrors without the special reflective silver backing. Sound confusing? Don't worry?we'll get to see all of these concepts in action. In this activity we will use a transparent surface to see how it both transmits and reflects light. This will allow us to learn about light by interacting with the real, visible space behind the surface where virtual images appear.

Materials
? Two tea candles
? Matches or a lighter to light the candles?along with adult assistance or supervision for doing so
? CD jewel case with one glossy, transparent surface
? Dark surface (you can create one by laying a black T-shirt flat on a table)
? Identical household items (paper clips, etcetera) in pairs (optional)

Preparation
? Find a room that can be made dark by turning the lights off.
? With the lights still on, prepare your dark surface.
? Remove the album art from the CD case if it has any so that the hinged front cover is now a transparent panel.
? Use caution (and adult assistance/supervision) when lighting the candles and working with lit ones.

Procedure
? ? Working on your dark surface with the lights still on, stand the CD case on its bottom edge. Open the CD case at a 90-degree angle.
? Take one unlit tea candle and place it on the side of the CD case's transparent panel nearest you. Make sure you can see its reflection. Where in space does the reflected image appear to be? Why do you think this is?
? Take the other unlit tea candle and place it on the other side of the transparent panel. Adjust the position of the second candle so that it's in the same apparent location as the reflection of your first tea candle.
? Move your head around while looking at the second tea candle through the CD case. Can you see the reflection of the first tea candle? Does the reflection ever not appear to be transposed over the actual location of the second tea candle?
? Now, take a look at the orientation of the CD case and the tea candles from above. Note the position of the two tea candles. What's special about their positions relative to the CD case's transparent panel?
? Nudge the first tea candle away from the CD case slightly. What happens to the reflection?
? Nudge the second tea candle to match the apparent location of the first tea candle's reflection.
? Turn off the lights and light the tea candle located on the side of the transparent panel nearest you. Look at the reflected image. What do you see?
? Extra: If you want to turn this into a great illusion for another observer, do it again, just make sure they don't see how you set it up beforehand! Your observer should observe the illusion from the side of the transparent pane with the lit candle. Touch the wick of the unlit candle on the opposite side of the panel with your hand. Your observer may be surprised that you don't burn yourself!
? Extra: Without looking at the reflections directly, try to make a diorama with household objects such as paper clips on both sides of the CD case so that the reflections match perfectly. It may be easier if you make it without the lit candles. Hint: The tea candles demonstrated how far away from a mirror two objects need to be to match each other's reflections.

Car bomb explodes outside mosque in Bahrain

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - A car bomb exploded outside a Sunni Muslim mosque as worshippers attended late-night prayers in a district where members of Bahrain's royal family live, the Interior Ministry said on Thursday.

No one was reported hurt in the attack in Riffa south of the capital Manama late on Wednesday, in what government officials said was an attempt to inflame sectarian tensions.

Bahrain, a majority Shi'ite country but ruled by the Sunni al Khalifa family, has been buffeted by political unrest since 2011, with mostly Shi'ite Bahrainis agitating for democratic reforms and more say in government.

Police were hunting for the assailants, who used a gas cylinder placed inside a vehicle parked outside the mosque, the Interior Ministry said.

Witnesses said several vehicles were destroyed in the explosion but there were no reports of injuries.

The attack was condemned by the main Shi'ite opposition group, Wefaq, as well as government officials including King Hamad bin Issa al-Khalifa.

Authorities have largely crushed the revolt in the island which is home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet and sits between top oil exporter Saudi Arabia and Washington's main regional antagonist Iran, but small-scale clashes and protests erupt almost daily.

National reconciliation talks between the government and opposition parties have made little progress since they began in February.

King Hamad ordered swift action against all those who incite violence, state news agency BNA said.

In a statement on its website, Al Wefaq condemned the attack, saying "the demands of the political majority in Bahrain is democratic transition that adopted peaceful methods."

Sports doctor Anthony Galea under investigation in Ontario

Anthony Galea, the high-profile Toronto sports doctor whose innovative treatments have landed him in legal trouble and garnered acclaim from hundreds of professional athletes, is under investigation by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

College spokeswoman Prithi Yelaja on Thursday described the investigation into Dr. Galea as ?active? but declined to elaborate, offering no details on how long the probe has been open or what spurred investigators to take action.

More Related to this Story

?For this particular case, I can tell you that there is an active investigation under way, but I can?t give you any more details than that,? Ms. Yelaja said. ?I can?t tell you exactly what we?re looking into.?

Dr. Galea pleaded guilty in federal court in the United States in 2011 to illegally transporting ?misbranded? drugs, including human growth hormone, across the border. A year later, Canadian prosecutors dropped charges against Dr. Galea that alleged he imported Actovegin, a derivative of calf?s blood used to accelerate healing of injuries that is not approved in Canada.

His lawyer, Brian Greenspan, expressed shock at the college describing his client as being under investigation.

In a telephone interview, Mr. Greenspan said the college has inquired about Dr. Galea?s brushes with the law and the nature of his practice periodically since his legal woes began in 2009, but that he would not cast those inquiries as an ?active investigation.?

Mr. Greenspan said Dr. Galea has satisfactorily answered all the college?s questions, and could not recall how long it had been since his client last corresponded with the college.

?It would be to my surprise, too, that he was being actively investigated,? Mr. Greenspan said, adding later, ?I think the person was ill-advised and ill-informed to have said something like that. But again, maybe they know something I don?t know.?

Dr. Galea had avoided the spotlight for the better part of a year until this week, when his name surfaced in connection with a Canadian trainer at the centre of an alleged track-and-field doping scandal. The trainer, Chris Xuereb, worked intermittently over several years at Dr. Galea?s west-end Toronto clinic, the Institute of Sports Medicine and Wellness Centre. Mr. Greenspan has said Mr. Xuereb was fired three years ago. Ms. Yelaja would not say whether the investigation stems from Dr. Galea?s past or was launched anew with the revelation of his link to Mr. Xuereb.

The college, which regulates doctors in the province, has never brought professional charges against Dr. Galea or imposed any restrictions on his licence.

Senate clears hurdle for Labor secretary nominee

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate voted by the slimmest margin Wednesday to end a filibuster against President Barack Obama's choice to head the Labor Department, as this week's agreement averting a poisonous partisan clash over nominations and the chamber's rules barely survived its toughest test so far.

By 60-40, senators rejected Republican objections and voted to halt delaying tactics aimed at killing Thomas Perez's nomination to become labor secretary.

It takes 60 votes to end filibusters. With all 52 Democrats and both Democratic-leaning independents voting to halt the delays, Republicans supplied the minimum number of votes needed to keep Perez's selection alive ? six.

In so doing, the GOP seemed to signal that while they would adhere to the agreement, their ranks bristling with unhappiness over the deal itself and against Perez in particular. In the deal announced Tuesday, top Republicans agreed to end delays against seven stalled Obama nominations and Democrats promised to drop efforts to change Senate rules to limit filibusters.

Perez is a top Justice Department official whom Republicans have criticized for his handling of a whistle-blower case against the city of St. Paul, Minn. They dispute whether he has fully cooperated with their efforts to obtain his personal emails in that case.

"What I'm saying to my Republican colleagues is, I don't care what deal you cut," said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a leader of the opposition to Perez. "How could you possibly agree to move forward on a nomination when the nominee refuses to comply with a congressional subpoena?"

Republicans voting to end the Perez filibuster were Sens. John McCain of Arizona, an architect of this week's deal, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Susan Collins of Maine, Bob Corker of Tennessee, Mark Kirk of Illinois and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

It was not clear when the Senate would vote on final confirmation of Perez's nomination, but it was expected soon.

Minutes earlier, senators voted 82-17 to approve Fred Hochberg to a second four-year term to head the Export-Import Bank, which provides financing for U.S. exporters.

"We have now started a new era, I hope, a new normal here in the Senate" of increased bipartisan cooperation, said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., as the day began.

But a day after the agreement on nominations was announced and largely hailed by both parties, conservatives and other Republicans made their unhappiness with Perez ? and the overall deal ? clear.

"Why would you want somebody in the Cabinet thumbing their noses at the elected representatives of the people of this country," Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, one of the chamber's senior Republicans, said of Perez.

"It seems to me the implication is we're supposed to simply routinely rubber-stamp everyone," said Sen. Patrick Toomey, R-Pa. "There can't be any objections ever, whatsoever. Well, that's not what the Constitution calls for."

Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., said Perez and the Justice Department had responded to all "reasonable requests" from Congress for information and said, "He's a professional, he listens and tries to make the right judgment."

In exchange for cooperation on the nominations, majority Democrats have dropped a threat, for now, to change Senate rules to weaken minority Republicans' powers. They had been threatening to muscle through a rules change eliminating the need to get 60 votes to free a nomination for final approval.

The pact only addressed the seven initial nominees and left open the possibility that confrontations would emerge anew over future Obama nominations that could spark controversy, such as for federal judges or to head the Internal Revenue Service or Department of Homeland Security.

Votes on Gina McCarthy, Obama's choice to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, were also expected this week.

Also Wednesday, Richard Cordray was sworn in as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The Senate confirmed him on Tuesday, the first of the seven stalled nominations to clear the chamber.

As part of the resulting agreement, Obama withdrew his nominations of two nominees to the National Labor Relations Board, Richard Griffin and Sharon Block, both opposed by the GOP.

In their places, Obama nominated Nancy Schiffer, a former top lawyer for the AFL-CIO, and Kent Hirozawa, counsel to NLRB Chairman Mark Pearce.

The seventh Obama appointment involved in the bipartisan deal is Pearce.

Papal twitter account decreed to offer 'indulgences' for followers

?

Worshippers must have 'requisite devotion' to receive during World Youth Day

The Vatican is modernizing an old tradition on Twitter. Followers of the Papal twitter account are being offered "indulgences" to followers, thereby reducing the amount of time Catholics believe they will have to spend in Purgatory after absolution of sin. Attendance to the upcoming Rio World Youth Day is normally required but those following the "rites and pious exercises" of the event through television, radio and social media will be granted the indulgence.

"You can't obtain indulgences like getting a coffee from a vending machine," Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, head of the pontifical council for social communication, told the Italian daily Corriere della Sera. The indulgence requires the awardee to have previously confessed and be "truly penitent and contrite."

"What really counts is that the tweets the Pope sends from Brazil or the photos of the Catholic World Youth Day that go up on Pinterest produce authentic spiritual fruit in the hearts of everyone," said Celli. Praying while following the event starting on July 22 must be carried out with "requisite devotion."

Verizon?s massive iPhone sales hint at an Apple earnings surprise next week

iPhone sales jumped dramatically at Verizon. And Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty recently upped her forecast of the number of phones Apple is selling this quarter.

Are we in for some surprises with Apple earnings next week?

Verizon?s results, released today, reveal that 3.8 million of its 7.5 million new smartphone activations this past quarter were iPhones. That?s 51 percent of all new smartphone activations, and the 3.8 million iPhones is a 41 percent increase from the 2.7 million iPhones Verizon activated in the year-ago quarter.

That?s impressive.

mcor-3d-printed-iphone?Either Verizon is doing much better than other carriers this quarter or our iPhone estimates are conservative,? Apple analyst Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets said in a research note this morning. ?Over the past seven quarters, Verizon has accounted for approximately 11% of Apple?s total iPhone shipments and 10% in 2QCY12. Based on our current iPhone estimates, Verizon would account for approximately 13.6% of iPhone sales in 2QCY13.?

Put that together with Katy Huberty?s comments yesterday, in which she said that Apple would report shipments of between 29 to 32 million iPhones next week, up from consensus estimates of 26.5 million, and it looks like the consensus estimates might indeed be conservative.

So we may see a quarterly earnings surprise on Thursday next week, as Apple reveals its Q3 2013 numbers

One caveat White is careful to add:

?Although we never try to rely too much on iPhone activations from a single carrier or emphasize a single data point too much, the Verizon print appears to be positive.?

The core question is whether it?s just Verizon seeing these high numbers, or other carriers, too; and whether Apple can translate its domestic success, where recent numbers have iPhone growing faster than Android,?to international markets, which are overwhelmingly Android.

For that, of course, a cheaper iPhone would come in handy?? even if it?s not in Apple?s religion.

The markets have responded to Verizon?s news already, with Apple stock up about $3 in the morning so far.

Driving somewhere? There's a gov't record of that

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Chances are, your local or state police departments have photographs of your car in their files, noting where you were driving on a particular day, even if you never did anything wrong.

Using automated scanners, law enforcement agencies across the country have amassed millions of digital records on the location and movement of every vehicle with a license plate, according to a study published Wednesday by the American Civil Liberties Union. Affixed to police cars, bridges or buildings, the scanners capture images of passing or parked vehicles and note their location, uploading that information into police databases. Departments keep the records for weeks or years, sometimes indefinitely.

As the technology becomes cheaper and more ubiquitous, and federal grants focus on aiding local terrorist detection, even small police agencies are able to deploy more sophisticated surveillance systems. While the Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that a judge's approval is needed to track a car with GPS, networks of plate scanners allow police effectively to track a driver's location, sometimes several times every day, with few legal restrictions. The ACLU says the scanners assemble what it calls a "single, high-resolution image of our lives."

"There's just a fundamental question of whether we're going to live in a society where these dragnet surveillance systems become routine," said Catherine Crump, a staff attorney with the ACLU. The civil rights group is proposing that police departments immediately delete any records of cars not linked to a crime.

Law enforcement officials said the scanners can be crucial to tracking suspicious cars, aiding drug busts and finding abducted children. License plate scanners also can be efficient. The state of Maryland told the ACLU that troopers could "maintain a normal patrol stance" while capturing up to 7,000 license plate images in a single eight hour shift.

"At a time of fiscal and budget constraints, we need better assistance for law enforcement," said Harvey Eisenberg, chief of the national security section and assistant U.S. attorney in Maryland.

Law enforcement officials also point out that the technology is legal in most cases, automating a practice that's been done for years. The ACLU found that only five states have laws governing license plate readers. New Hampshire, for example, bans the technology except in narrow circumstances, while Maine and Arkansas limit how long plate information can be stored.

"There's no expectation of privacy" for a vehicle driving on a public road or parked in a public place, said Lt. Bill Hedgpeth, a spokesman for the Mesquite Police Department in Texas, which has records stretching back to 2008, although the city plans next month to begin deleting files older than two years. "It's just a vehicle. It's just a license plate."

In Yonkers, N.Y., just north of the Bronx, police said retaining the information indefinitely helps detectives solve future crimes. In a statement, the department said it uses license plate readers as a "reactive investigative tool" that is only accessed if detectives are looking for a particular vehicle in connection to a crime.

"These plate readers are not intended nor used to follow the movements of members of the public," the department's statement said.

But even if law enforcement officials say they don't want a public location tracking system, the records add up quickly. In Jersey City, N.J., for example, the population is only 250,000 but the city collected more than 2 million plate images on file. Because the city keeps records for five years, the ACLU estimates that it has some 10 million on file, making it possible for police to plot the movements of most residents depending upon the number and location of the scanners, according to the ACLU.

The ACLU study, based on 26,000 pages of responses from 293 police departments and state agencies across the country, also found that license plate scanners produced a small fraction of "hits," or alerts to police that a suspicious vehicle has been found. In Maryland, for example, the state reported reading about 29 million plates between January and May of last year. Of that amount, about 60,000 ? or roughly 1 in every 500 license plates ? were suspicious. The No. 1 crime? A suspended or revoked registration, or a violation of the state's emissions inspection program accounted for 97 percent of all alerts.

Eisenberg, the assistant U.S. attorney, said the numbers "fail to show the real qualitative assistance to public safety and law enforcement." He points to the 132 wanted suspects the program helped track. They were a small fraction of the 29 million plates read, but he said tracking those suspects can be critical to keeping an area safe.

Also, he said, Maryland has rules in place restricting access for criminal investigations only. Most records are retained for one year in Maryland, and the state's privacy policies are reviewed by an independent board, Eisenberg noted.

At least in Maryland, "there are checks, and there are balances," he said.

Marketing blitz, discounts fail to sustain Apple iPhone sales in India

BANGALORE: Smartphone maker Apple has seen a sharp fall in its India sales during the first three months of 2013, a trend that analysts say might persist as the California-based company looks to make deeper inroads into world's third-largest smartphone market.

Sales in India had soared soon after the November launch of iPhone 5, the latest iteration of Apple's smartphone. In an uncharacteristic move, Apple followed up with a sustained marketing campaign, advertising discounts schemes and monthly instalment options for customers in India, where its phones are seen as too expensive.

"The October-December quarter was an exceptional one for iPhone, but that hasn't been the case since then," said Manasi Yadav, who tracks India's smartphone market for researcher IDC. According to IDC data, iPhone sales have been on a downward trend after the robust sales in response to the marketing campaign and financing schemes.

Between January and March, Apple sold some 120,000 iPhones in India, down from the 230,000 in the October-December quarter of last year, according to IDC. That translated into its share falling from 4.7% to 2.1%. In India, Apple faces competition from South Korean rival Samsung as well as local brands such as Micromax and Karbonn, all of which are among the top three in terms of market share.

Apple did not reply to emailed queries seeking its views.

"The initial buzz around Apple is over," said Faisal Kawoosa, analyst at market researcher CyberMedia Research, who remarked that iPhone sales have been falling in the past two-three months as well.

Samsung, which has a 40% share of the smartphone market in India, had responded to Apple's marketing and sales moves with its own offers of discounts and financing schemes.

Even globally, Apple has been facing increasing criticism about the absence of new device launches that could help the company continue its popularity among users.

Since the launch of iPhone 5, the company's stock has fallen nearly 40%. Analysts have also been awaiting clarity from Apple's management about its strategy to gain in emerging markets such as China and India.

Research firm Strategy Analytics estimates that nearly 10 million smartphones were sold in India during the first three months of 2013, making it third-largest market after the US and China.

Apple's slowdown is also impacting its large national distributors such as Redington, which sold some Rs 1,100 crore worth of iPhone in the last five months of 2012. An analyst with a foreign brokerage that tracks the Chennai-headquartered distributor said that he estimates this to fall to as low as Rs 800 crore in 2013 on account of waning demand for the device. Sales of iPhones make up some 7% of Redington's revenue.

According to Kawoosa, the discounts and EMI schemes may have affected Apple's brand image among high-end smartphone users. "Apple has a certain image and it is not the sort of brand that gives you huge discounts. I think they went after market share at cost of diluting brand value and this was clearly a short-sighted strategy."

Monster hail storm causes major damage in Irricana, Alberta, Canada

Residents of Irricana, are cleaning up after a monster thunderstorm rolled through town July 6, leaving more than a foot of hail in its wake.

Life-long residents are stunned as photos and stories emerge of the devastation of the storm.

"Never in all my years," David Butters, resident of Irricana since 1974 said, while showing off the flooding and destruction along First Street. "I've never seen anything like this."

He's not the only one.

"It was unreal," said Frank Dusome, owner of Irricana Collision. "The front door (of the business) is an out-swinging door and I couldn't get out because of the foot of hail."

Remanence of the hail could still be found along First Ave, as of July 8.

Dusome had to resort to climbing outside through a back window and over his back gate, to shovel the hail in order to open his front door.

"It's the worst I've seen and I've been here 12 years," Dusome said.

The hail wasn't the only headache for the town of nearly 1,200, residents along First Street are coping with flooded backyards and basements.

Darwin Powell, a 13-year resident of Irricana, was enjoying a summer's afternoon in his backyard when the storm hit.

"I had a small fire (in the fire pit) and the storm knocked that out in minutes," he recalled. "The hail had such force behind it that it took out all my plants."

Entire rows of plants along his shed have been destroyed, as have his trees and backyard - which has submerged under nearly a foot of water on July 8.

Powell said he is grateful he doesn't have a basement to his house because the amount of water running through his property could have settled in a basement.

Butters wasn't so lucky, his basement is holding the remaining flood water.

He's tried to pump the water out, but insists that it only makes the problem worse, as the water will start to come back in, due to poor drainage in the town.

There is no official tally of hail that fell on July 6 as Environment Canada weather stations cannot track the amount in the community.

However, Bill McMurty, meteorologist with Environment Canada, said it was an "impressive" weather system.

"It was an extensive amount of hail," he said. "A line of slow-moving thunderstorms moved into the area, which means they can produce a lot of weather element, and that's what happened."

The amount of precipitation that fell and the amount of time the hail lasted, is rare, McMurty said.

The storm, which raged from the northwest and held Irricana captive for two-hours, flattened farmers fields as well.

"Of what is left, it's all stubble,"

Dusome said of local crops.

The Town's vegetation, took the hardest hit, as is evident in resident Lorna Fraser's vegetable garden on First Street.

Whole rows of peas, onions, beans, beets, potatoes, raspberries and dill were demolished, and the garden is a virtual right off.

Fallen trees, narrowly missing homes, crashed to the ground, and left residents cleaning up the mess.

The town's beautification efforts were also lost, as planters that were placed for decoration in the up coming Summer Fair celebrations July 12 and 13, were destroyed.

While the town is cleaning up out of the mess, residents agree they are thankful no one was injured.

According to Airdrie RCMP Cst. Templeman, there were no weather-related accidents reported on local roads on July 6. However, she said officers attended a number of home and business security alarms triggered by the storm.
