Children's Health & Fitness ? Addressing Childhood Obesity

May 19th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From The Observer in Canada?..

A provincial panel has been formed to help reduce childhood obesity by 20% over five years ? good news for a county that scored a D minus in the most recent Active Health Kids Canada survey, a Lambton County official says.

?This is a great thing,? said health promoter Anita Trusler. ?I think it?s partly a result of the Active Healthy Kids Report Card, which was a call to action.?

A 17-member Healthy Kids Panel was announced Friday ? co-chaired by Alex Munter, Children?s Hospital of Eastern Ontario CEO, and Kelly Murumets, president and CEO of ParticipAction ? to come up with an Ontario model to reduce childhood obesity.

Three quarters of obese children grow up to be obese adults, according to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Obese children are more at risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, gallbladder disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer.

Canadian children spend 73% to 84% of their waking hours in a sedentary state, according to academic studies from 2004 and 2010, and 57% of Sarnia-Lambton adults are overweight or obese.

In Ontario, 25.6% of youth ages two to 17 are overweight or obese.
