Muscles Involved in Rowing
As the Concept 2 website notes, rowing involves every large muscle group. Concept 2 pinpoints the muscles you use in every phase of the rowing stroke. The starting point of the rowing stroke is called the catch phase ? your knees are bent and shins are vertical. At this point, your triceps are working as you extend your arms and the flexor muscles of your fingers and thumbs are used to grip the handle. You go into the drive phase by using the powerful muscles of your legs as well as the shoulder muscles. The biceps, back muscles, glutes, hamstrings and nearly all the muscles of your upper body get a work out as you metaphorically pull the oars through the water. The finish phase of the rowing stroke engages the abs, glutes, quads, biceps, upper arms and back muscles. The recovery phase works the triceps, abs, hamstrings and calves.
