Australia beat Ireland by seven wickets ? Cricket News Roundup ? Part I ? September 19, 2012
An all-round performance from Shane Watson saw Australia clinching seven-wicket win in their World T20 opener against Ireland, at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo today, Wednesday, September 19, 2012.
After opting to bat first, the Irish outfit struggled against the Australian pacers right from the word go, as skipper Porterfield holed out on the first ball of the day, caught by Mitchell Starc off Shane Watson. The rest of the batting line-up also failed to stand up against the formidable Australian attack as they could manage 123 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. All-rounder Kevin O?Brien top scored with a 29-ball 35, followed by brother Niall O?Brien (20). While the rest of the batting line-up fell for scores inside 20.
All-rounder Shane Watson, who was Australia?s wrecker in chief returning with figures of three for 26 in four overs, led the Australian chase from the front. The right-handed top-order batsman played a whirlwind half-century knock off 30 balls, studded with five boundaries and three sixes, as Australia chased sown the paltry total in 15.1 overs, with seven wickets to spare.
Rookie England off-spinner Danny Briggs is hoping to take fine form into the World T20 tournament, come the Group A fixture against Afghanistan, on Friday.
Selected ahead of spin-bowling spearhead Graeme Swann, the Hampshire spinner returned with match winning haul of three for 15, to help England defend a paltry 111 in the second warm-up match against Pakistan, at the P Sara Oval, in Colombo today.
"It came out really nicely, which is pleasing and really good in our preparation. It's good to go into a tournament with confidence, and I hope that can carry on," said Briggs after the 15-run victory. "We knew we were always in the game, with any score on the board, and the way we bowled in the second half showed that," he added further.
New Zealand seamer Tim Southee and batsman Rob Nicol have been declared fit for Friday?s world cup opener against Bangladesh.
"The players have shown good improvement," team spokesman Ellery Tappin told?AFP?on Wednesday. "They are currently travelling from Colombo to join the team in Kandy."
The duo, along with all-rounder Daniel Vettori was struck by a bout of gastroenteritis. Whilst Southee and Nicol have recovered in time for Friday?s match, Vettori is still struggling with low energy levels.
