The Braverman's lives took a sharp turn on Tuesday night's "Parenthood," when just after sending their daughter Haddie (Sarah Ramos) off to college on the other side of the country, Kristina (Monica Potter) was diagnosed with breast cancer.
After getting the news, Kristina broke down when she had to tell her husband Adam (Peter Krause) that the doctor found a lump. The entire shocking and heart-wrenching scene was shot without dialogue while music played in the background.
"Parenthood" creator Jason Katims told Entertainment Weekly he chose to introduce the cancer storyline after watching his own wife beat the disease.
"Breast cancer is such a prevalent thing and many people have gone through it," he said. "I thought it was a story that we could tell because of what the show is and because of these wonderful actors involved in doing the show."
In an interview with TVLine, actress Monica Potter said the breast cancer storyline was one they were meant to do. "I had talked to Jason about what we were going to do with Kristina this season and had sent him an email asking if we could introduce this storyline, and he said, 'I just got chills because we just broke that story for Kristina,'" Potter told TVLine. "He was way ahead of me! So, it [felt] like we were supposed to do this."
But Katims assured The Hollywood Reporter that it wouldn't be all tears for Kristia and the Bravermans. "Suddenly you're confronted with your mortality or the immortality of a loved one and you have to face that," he told THR. "We were really adamant about telling the story in a very real way, including the joyful, silly moments and the times when you're not giving in to your emotions about it."
See how the story unfolds on "Parenthood," Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
