On Sunday night (February 26), "The Help" star Octavia Spencer nabbed the prize for Actress in a Supporting Role at the 2012 Oscars, beating out her "Help" co-star Jessica Chastain, as well as "The Artist" star Bérénice Bejo, "Bridesmaids" funny lady Melissa McCarthy and "Albert Nobbs" actress Janet McTeer.
With tears in her eyes, she accepted the Oscar, handed to her by last year's best supporting actor winner for "The Fighter," Christian Bale. "Thank you, Academy, for putting me with the hottest guy in the room," she joked from the stage, clutching her prize. "I have to thank my families. My family in Alabama — the state of Alabama. My L.A. family watching at Steven's. My 'Help' family. I share this with everybody. Thank you [producer] Steven Spielberg for changing my life."
As she tried to fit in all her thank-you's, she was getting wrapped by the show's producers, and graciously finished up her acceptance speech. " 'Please wrap up.' I'm wrapping up. I'm sorry. I'm freaking out," she said with a laugh. "Thank you, world! Oh god, and thank you to WME [talent agency] and Viewpoint L.A. I'm sorry, guys. I love you. I'm sorry," she finished, trying to hold back tears.
This is hardly the first piece of hardware she's taken home for her star-making role in the Tate Taylor-directed film, which takes place in the South during the civil rights movement. Spencer plays one of the maids profiled in a book written by the film's leading lady, played by Emma Stone. She previously won the Golden Globe, BAFTA and Critics' Choice Award for her part in the flick.
"The Help" is also up for Actress in a Lead Role for Viola Davis, as well as the night's big prize, Best Picture.
