San Francisco office of special needs dentistry, our team at Blende Dental hosts a free autism awareness event Wednesday, June 20, 2012 from 5:30 to 7 PM. Autism and the event will include special presentations of oral health San Francisco sedation dentist, Dr. David Blende, and experts from the spectrum disorder communities autisms impact on oral health. RSVP required.

Autism is a disorder that affects a large population, but many people remain unaware of the prevalence and health effects, said Dr. Blende. We hope to help bridge the knowledge gap so that the lives of children and all people involved with autism may be less difficult in the future.

According http://www.AutismSpeaks.org

, the prevalence of autism is increasing and it is estimated that more children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes and cancer together. Autism is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the United States, by making 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys. Dr. Blenda recognizes this and says that autism has many consequences for the lives of individuals and, ultimately, can impact overall health and wellness.

Many patients are afraid of dental work

autistic because of a lack of understanding about what the dentist actually do for them, said Dr. Blende. This means that usually the time to go without seeing a dentist, and, of course, that exacerbates the existing dental problems. Fortunately, with the intervention as soon as possible, there can be positive.

For some, like Deborah Harris, mother of RJ Harris, a group of dental patients autistic recent The blende, this sounds familiar to us all. Fortunately for the family and others, the Blende Dental team provides a range of services to meet the diverse needs of their patients. These options include dental sedation (IV sedation with an anesthetist at the clinic or hospital), which allows the patient to be completely asleep during the entire process. For the specific needs of patients who are housebound, home visits could be another option. These options reduce barriers to the provision of dental care for people with autism and other disabilities.

My son is autistic, has Down syndrome and seizures and hadnt had dental work in this, more than 20 years, Harris said. We had already been rejected by many other dental services because of the risk, and a conclusion that even if they were put under general anesthesia, can not return. Dr. Blenda denied this and knew the exact balance of sedation required for a successful outcome.

adds, not only was the team technically sound, but also compassion and ability to work with me and my son, as a member of their group, making the process both efficient and satisfactory.

Together

Dr. Blende, autism and oral health cocktail event will include speakers Emmylou Santos, an analyst Ages behavioral learning solutions and dental assistant Victoria Cameron. These professionals will share their ideas to improve the health of dental patients with autism and other developmental disorders. It will cover both the technology to improve daily oral hygiene and a clinical point of view on issues of oral health that arise in this group.
