Swim team has strong weekend at Divisionals
GUELPH, Ont. (November 19, 2012) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks swim team competed this past weekend at the OUA Tihanyi-Stratten Division Championships hosted by the University of Guelph. Dedication to training and a positive team spirit lead to exceptional results from all swimmers.?
Numerous swimmers placed Top 16 in their individual events throughout the weekend. All events were timed finals and five male Laurier athletes finished Top 8 in the division. Leading off the weekend Christopher Courtis placed fourth in 50m backstroke with a time of 27.41. Placing eighth in 200m (1:56.62) and 400m (4:17.95) freestyle was Christopher Caldwell. Graham Smith finished fifth in 50m breaststroke (30.79) and sixth in 100m breaststroke (1:06.37). Next up for the Hawks was Lukas Summerhayes coming eighth in the 100m breaststroke (1:06.61), sixth in 200m breaststroke (2:28.70) and fourth in 200m IM (2:10.01). Wrapping up the men's Top 8 finalists, Richard Naylor placed seventh in 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:33.08.?
The Laurier women's team had four Top 8 finishers. Renee Dijk placed in three backstroke events: seventh in 50m (30.58), fourth in 100m (1:04.45) and fourth in 200m (2:19.30). Fast racing qualified Dijk for the CIS Championships in Calgary in March.
Coming eighth in 100m freestyle (1:00.68) and seventh in 200m freestyle (2:11.28) was Alana Corrigan. A time of 1:16.03 lead Veronica Davis-Freeman to fifth place in 100m breaststroke. Concluding the women's individual events was Miranda Smelt, placing seventh in 200m IM in a time of 2:29.89.?
With the Laurier swim team cheering from the sidelines the men's and women's relay teams all placed Top 8. In the 200m freestyle relay, the men's team came fourth with a time of 1:38.03 (Courtis, Summerhayes, McAuley, Riobo) and the women came fifth in 1:52.51 (Dijk, Davis-Freeman, Corrigan, Rawn). Both teams placed eighth in the 400m freestyle relay, the men's team in 3:43.23 (Caldwell, McAuley, Watson, Naylor) and women's team in 4:17.85 (Neal, Ferguson, Smelt, Bautista). Finishing off the racing, the men placed fifth in the 200m medley relay with 1:48.46 (Courtis, Smith, Summerhayes, Riobo) and the women came sixth in 2:02.95 (Dijk, Davis-Freeman, Corrigan, Rawn).?
The Wilfrid Laurier varsity swim team had an outstanding weekend of individual and team racing. Next up for the Golden Hawks is Brock Invitational in St. Catherines on Saturday November 24th 2012.
