NCAA Basketball Gambling: Arizona, Wyoming no longer perfect, Duke and Michigan remain
| Two teams back in action this weekend after losing their first games of the season. Wyoming, who while good was on borrowed time after playing a fairly soft schedule, lost at home to Boise State, 63-61. The Cowboys go on the road to face Nevada on Saturday. Arizona's streak ended last night in Eugene as Oregon held on for a 70-66 victory. The Wildcats have a day to record and then visit Oregon State. Duke (15-0, at NC State) and Michigan (16-0, at Ohio State) remain the only two unbeatens. Out of curiosity, we went back the last two years and looked how teams with extended perfect records fared after being issued their first loss of the season. It is a small sample but there doesn't look to be a significant hangover effect. The best example was two years ago when Syracuse was 18-0 and lost to Pittsburgh. The next time out against Villanova in the Carrier Dome, the Orange trailed 40-29 at half and lost by the same margin as 5.5-point home favorites. 2011-12? Missouri 14-0, Loss at Kansas State, Next game won at covered at Iowa State. Baylor 17-0, Loss at Kansas, Next game SU/ATS loss vs. Missouri. Murray State 23-0, Loss vs. Tennessee State, Next game won and covered vs. Austin Peay. 2010-11? Kansas 18-0, Loss vs. Texas, Next game won but failed to cover at Colorado. San Diego State 20-0, Loss at BYU, Next game won and covered vs. Wyoming. Syracuse 18-0, Loss at Pittsburgh, Next game SU/ATS loss vs. Villanova. College Basketball Gambling Free Pick: Wright State Raiders at Loyola Ramblers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Wright State +4 at Loyola Chicago O/U 115.5? Recommendation: Wright State This was supposed to be another down year for Wright State; still rebuilding following a string of 20+ win seasons under Brad Brownell (now at Clemson).? But a funny thing happened to Billy Donlon?s squad on the way to the Horizon League cellar ? they started playing great basketball, right from the get-go.? On opening night, the Raiders pulled the outright upset as ten point road dogs at Idaho.? They followed that up with wins away from home against Eastern Illinois, Idaho State and Hofstra.? Wright played at Cincinnati and hung tough throughout, a wire-2-wire ATS cover as 18 point dogs.? And here in Horizon League play, we?ve seen the Raiders win each of their first three games, two in blowout fashion, thanks to a stifling defense that has held nine of their last ten opponents under 60 points. Even in last year?s disappointing 13 win season, the Raiders still beat up Loyola-Chicago in both meetings, including a 16 point win here in Chicago.? They swept Loyola in 2011 as well, winning by 17 on the Ramblers home floor.? In fact, Loyola has just one win against Wright State in the last ten meetings between these two squads, and that win came by a single point on New Year?s Eve in 2009. Loyola got off to a surprising start as well, but they?ve come back to earth here in January, losing as home chalk to Youngstown in their last try on this floor, then getting blasted at Green Bay earlier in the week.? The Ramblers are a limited offensive ballclub, and they don?t play ?D? at Wright State?s level; primed for another home loss this evening.? ? College Basketball Betting: NC State still in search of a marquee win | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| It's a new year but worth pointing out NC State's struggles at home vs. the ACC and when asked to step up in class. Against conference foes last year, the Wolfpack were 4-4 SU and a dismal 0-7-1 ATS in Raleigh. And dating back to last year, with the expectation of a second round win over Georgetown in the NCAA Tournament, NC State routinely fell short against better competition. Against Ken Pom's Top 25, the Wolfpack went 1-11 SU and 4-7 ATS under head coach Mark Gottfried. NC State plays host to Duke on Saturday. Last Year vs. Ken Pom Top 25? NBA Handicapping: Golden State looks for better post defense vs. Portland | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Portland at Golden State -7.5 O/U 206.5 Some good in-depth stats to consider for tonight's Golden State-Portland matchup. Over their last two games, the Warriors were carved up in the paint by both the Clippers and Grizzlies to the tune of 56 and 60 points, respectively. Portland ranks 28th in the league in points in the paint at 35.9. Golden State is 5-10 when yielding at least 41 points in the paint and 17-2 when allowing 40 or fewer. "That's the strength of their team, is grinding in the paint and offensive rebounding," said David Lee, who has double-doubles in 11 of his last 14 games against Portland, including each of the last three. "It's disappointing, because that's been one of our strengths throughout the season, and we've just got to come back and do a better job of it next game." NBA Gambling News: Orlando Magic drop 10 straight but cover four of last five | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Not much was expected of the Orlando Magic this season. They were lined at 23.5 wins ? eight wins below Cleveland and nine wins below Detroit. But a few days prior to Christmas, things were looking up. The team had won four straight and were only one game below .500. But then they went on the road to Toronto and lost a tough three-point game. They followed in up with another close loss; 97-93 vs. Utah. And after that, you guessed it, a 97-94 home loss to New Orleans. So here were are three weeks later and all of a sudden, Orlando is on a 10-game losing streak. The Magic lost to Miami in overtime, to Chicago by 2, another overtime lost at Portland, and last time out a three-point loss at Denver. The one positive is that Orlando remains competitive having covered four of their last five (19-16 ATS YTD). Also note nine of those 10 games went OVER the total. Orlando's upcoming schedule is favorable. After closing out their West Coast trip at the Clippers on Saturday, they face the likes of Washington, Charlotte, Dallas, Detroit (twice) and Toronto over the next two weeks.Tags: NBA Orlando Magic | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
NFL Handicapping: Divisional Round Betting Consensus
Here is a breakdown of three different betting consensus reports for this weekend's NFL Divisional Round. We used Bookmaker, Sports Options, and Odds Shark. Interesting to see Green Bay garner a majority of the betting support for its matchup against San Francisco. The Packers may be more popular but a road underdog in the playoffs is not typically a popular profile with the betting public.

College Basketbal Betting Free Play: Texas-Arlington at Texas-San Antonio
| Submitted by ICCTexas-Arlington at Texas-San Antonio -1.5? Recommendation: Texas-San Antonio I?ve picked my spots in cashing a couple tickets against this Texas-Arlington squad and I think tonight offers another good opportunity for another fade as they take on Texas-San Antonio. The weakness all season for Texas-San Antonio has been their play on the defensive end of the court. The Roadrunners have allowed 70 points per game and a very poor 51% shooting to opposing teams on their home floor this season but I?m not sure that Arlington is offensively capable of taking advantage of the defensive woes. Arlington has been a consistently woeful shooting team most of the season and they failed to exceed 52 points scored in any of their last three home games ? SU and ATS losses to Denver, Boise State and Louisiana Tech. The Mavericks? struggles offensively have crippled their ability to win games and cover pointspreads especially when you consider that Boise State, who is far from a shut down defensive team, kept Arlington to just 46 points. The Mavericks are shooting below 40% for the season and just 31.5% from the perimeter. Arlington?s last game may be extra difficult to get over as they held a double-digit lead at home against Louisiana Tech with about eight minutes left in the second half before the roof caved in and the Bulldogs came back to win 55-52. That was a bitter loss for the Mavericks and there may still be a hangover effect from it heading into tonight. Texas-San Antonio has suffered some ugly results as of late with a couple of home losses against Utah State and San Jose State followed by two real ugly road losses by 20+ points at Denver and New Mexico State. But playing for the first time in four days, the Roadrunners should be ready for a strong bounce back effort tonight. UTSA has been battered and bruised from a road heavy schedule ? only three home games! UTSA has won each of the last three meetings against Arlington on this court dating back to 2010. The wrong team was favored in my opinion at first but it has since been corrected with UTSA opening as +2 point home underdogs and now the short home favorite. Despite the line move, I think there is still enough value to recommend a play on the home side. Tags: College Basketball Texas-Arlington Mavericks Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners Ian Cameron | |

College Basketbal Betting Free Pick: Arizona State Sun Devils at Oregon State Beavers
| Submitted by Andrew LangeArizona State at Oregon State -5? Recommendation: Oregon State I'm not sold on Arizona's 13-2, 2-0 PAC-12 start. Are the Sun Devils better than last year? No question. But the schedule has been extremely favorable thus far and things get a bit tougher starting tonight in Corvallis. For starters ASU has played one true road game against a Texas Tech squad that just lost on its home floor to Baylor by 34. Next, the Sun Devils are 2-0 in league play but needed overtime to get past Utah and were gift-wrapped a win against Colorado after the Buffaloes were hosed out of one on the road against undefeated Arizona. Oregon State meanwhile below a six-point halftime lead and ended up losing to rival Oregon 79-66 at home. With Arizona on deck and then back-to-back road games in LA, all of a sudden this game has a lot of meaning. If Oregon State can keep ASU's Jahii Carson in check ? I expect they?ll throw multiple defensive looks his way ? I think they?ll come away with a solid victory at home.? Sportsbook hoping to avoid 49ers vs. Broncos Super Bowl XLVII matchup | |
| According to LVH Sportsbook Director Jay Kornegay, the two most popular Super Bowl futures bets this season have been on the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos. ?They aren?t favorable results for us,? Kornegay said of the Broncos or 49ers winning the Super Bowl. ?But they?re not a big problem either. They don?t come with a lot of liability.? ?We can?t stop it,? Kornegay said incredulously at the time. ?The 49ers have by far the most tickets and the Broncos have the second-most. They both continue to get a ton of public support and there?s only a distant third.? Tags: NFL Denver Broncos San Francisco 49ers | |
College Basketball Betting: How long with Arizona's good fortunes last?
| Good college basketball teams have a tendency to win more close games than bad teams ? a theory that pretty much everyone subscribes to. However, throughout and entire season, even the elite at some point will fall victim to things not going their way late in a close contest. That brings us to Arizona who is undefeated despite playing a slew of close games over the last month. vs. Florida: Florida has a 64-58 lead with less than a minute to go in Tucson. The Gators foul and Arizona hits two free throws to cut it to 4. Florida turns it over and Arizona races down and cuts it to 2. Florida turns in over AGAIN and fouls, Arizona cuts it to one. The Gators then get fouled but miss the front end of a 1-and-1 and Arizona's Mark Lyons hits a shot with 7 seconds to go for the win. vs. San Diego State: This one was about as big of a coin flip as you can get as neither team had a lead of more than two points the last 10 minutes of the game. Tied 66-66, Arizona fouled and SDSU hit 1-of-2 from the line. And then the Aztecs fouled and the Wildcats went 2-of-2 from the line. Ball game. vs. Colorado: See below. ? Like we said, Arizona won those four games (1-3 ATS) in part because they are talented, tough, and well coached. But there was also some luck involved and in the case of the Colorado game, a shit ton of it. The Cats have played two true road games but are about to play three straight starting tonight in Eugene against Oregon. We'd venture to say than in at least one of those contests, it will be the opposition that benefits from the favorable bounces. Tags: College Basketball Arizona Wildcats | |
College Basketbal Betting Free Play: Louisville Cardinals at Seton Hall Pirates
| Submitted by Andrew LangeLouisville -10.5 at Seton Hall O/U 136.5? Recommendation: Over Louisville has put up outstanding defensive numbers this season but if you dig a little you'll notice that quality teams have had varying degrees of success. Providence shot 45% from the floor and 40% from three. Kentucky was even better at 48.3%/47.6%. Memphis hit nearly 52% of its shots and Illinois State did the same. Some of those games were without the services of post presence Gorgui Dieng who is now back but the loss of Chane Behanan once again leaves the Cardinals without a quality defender. Pitno said Behanan will be replaced by Montrezl Harrell who doesn't yet understand the intricacies of the team?s defense. Make no mistake, Louisville is still an elite defense, but in?its five games vs. BCS conference schools (and Memphis) the games scores were 145, 147, 165, 157 and 142. But beyond the ?so-so? defense, the two main reasons of those high scores were pace and Louisville's perhaps underrated offense. The Cardinals are averaging nearly 69 possessions per game and a very efficient 1.15 points per possession. They hit 80 vs. Providence, the same vs. Kentucky, and 87 on the road against Memphis. They should have success once again against Seton Hall who just allowed 93 points in a 66-possession game to Notre Dame. Prior to that, SH willingly ran up and down the floor with DePaul with the game hitting 145 points. The Pirates also played up-tempo against LSU and Wake Forest. Seton Hall is going to have a bunch of turnovers tonight which will lead to easy buckets for Louisville. But when the Pirates do get into their half court, they have multiple players who can shoot threes (38% as a team). In fact, Edwin, Cosby and Mobley have combined to hit 77-of-167, 46% from deep. I think at home Seton can find its way to the mid-60s which puts us in good position to get this game over. ? Tags: College Basketball Louisville Cardinals Seton Hall Pirates Andrew Lange | |
College Basketball Betting: Cincinnati looks for better effort vs. Notre Dame
| Notre Dame at Cincinnati -4 O/U 134 Cincinnati has flaws but the one thing bettors can typically bank on with the Bearcats is effort. And when you couple that effort with a better than average shooting night, Cinci is tough to beat. But in Saturday's 53-52 home loss to St. John's, Cinci not only couldn't shoot straight (31.7% FGs) but as head coach Mick Cronin pointed out, they?were outplayed in pretty much every facet of the game. "We got outplayed [for] 35 minutes," head coach Mick Cronin said emphatically in his postgame press conference. "We had one and a half guys come to play today. When that happens, you're going to lose." "Point blank, they just beat us to every loose ball," he said. "Every rebound that came off, that got tipped, they got it. They just outplayed us." "We better become a really good defensive team again and a really good rebounding team or we'll be in trouble Monday night," Cronin said. "Welcome to college basketball. The team that plays really hard, plays defense and rebounds is probably going to win. That's the reality." ?Tags: College Basketball Cincinnati Bearcats Notre Dame Fighting Irish | |
NFL Handicapping: A history of how quarterbacks fare in cold weather
| If you want to take your NFL handicapping to the next level, here is a comprehensive breakdown of quarterbacks in cold weather courtesy of coldhardfootballfacts.com. It looks as if Denver is going to be the only cold weather situation for this weekend ? temps in the low 30s with a chance of snow. Peyton Manning is 3-3 SU in cold weather situations (sub-freezing and/or snowing) in the postseason. Foxboro, Mass is slated for a rather balmy 57 degrees for Sunday.Tags: NFL | |
NBA Handicapper Free Play: Phoenix Suns at Boston Celtics
| Submitted by Teddy CoversPhoenix at Boston -9 O/U 191.5? Recommendation: Boston The Celtics hit rock bottom over the holidays; blown out in all three games on their West Coast swing (losing by 29, 18 and 22 points, all non-competitive efforts), then returning home only to get whipped by double-digits by the Grizzlies.? Instead of collapsing, the Celtics have rebounded with three consecutive strong performances ? a 19-point blowout over the Pacers followed by back-to-back SU wins as road underdogs against playoff caliber competition (Atlanta and New York).? All of a sudden the Celtics have some swagger back! Avery Bradley isn?t the type of name player that will move a pointspread when he?s hurt or healthy.? But make no mistake about it ? Avery Bradley is absolutely an impact player for these Celtics; a defensive stopper on the perimeter.? Bradley returned to the starting lineup against Philly and Doc Rivers? squad has enjoyed three of their best defensive games in months since his return.? And the Celtics will get All Star point guard Rajon Rondo back in the lineup tonight as well following his one game suspension; making their perimeter defense that much stronger! That?s bad news for the struggling Suns playing on the second night of back-to-backs off last night?s loss at Milwaukee.? Phoenix is a woeful 2-15 SU on the highway this year.? Their two road wins this year?? Cleveland and Charlotte, both bottom feeders and both coming back in November.? The Suns have been repeatedly unable to step up in class, just 4-8 ATS in their dozen tries as an underdog of six points or more.? And Alvin Gentry?s squad is one team that can?t take advantage of the Celtics weakness on the boards, ranked 26th in the NBA in rebounding margin.? Throw in the Suns consistent defensive woes and their 0-7 SU, 1-6 ATS marks playing on the second night of back-to-backs and the case for a Celtics double-digit win is perfectly clear!? NFL Gambling News: Seattle Seahawks forced to replace starting kicker | |
| Seattle at Atlanta -2.5 O/U 46 Not cause for concern but certainly worth noting that Seattle's kicker, Steven Hauschka, was placed on injured reserve. The Seahawks signed Ryan Longwell who has yet to play this season. Longwell played for Minnesota last year but was released after hitting a mediocre 78.6%. Longwell does however have a decent track record from 50 yards and beyond, hitting 10 of his last 11 dating back to 2008-09. That was one of the knocks on Hauschka who hit only 1-of-4 from that distance this season. Tags: NFL Seattle Seahawks Atlanta Falcons | |

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Los Angeles Lakers at San Antonio Spurs
| Submitted by Alf MusketaLA Lakers at San Antonio -13.5 O/U 216? Recommendation: San Antonio It's hard to imagine that the San Antonio Spurs are a huge 13.5-point favorite over a team that acquired Steve Nash and Dwight Howard in the off-season to compliment Kobe Bryant. Yes, they have injuries. Howard and Gasol were absent last night at Houston and with no real talent or big bodies to fill in the gaps, the Rockets dominated the paint scoring inside and driving to the basket for 62 points. But, injuries are only half the problem.? At this point in the Los Angeles Lakers' season I'm not sure if new head coach Mike Dantoni is the right fit. We know from the past that Dantoni's teams can score as the Lakers are averaging 103 ppg but they are also allowing 100 ppg, which ranks 27th in the NBA. Then there is the chemistry issue. We could write several pages of player's complaining and back talking. The Southwest Division leading Spurs are 17 games over .500. The Lakers are three games under .500. The Spurs have won eight of their last 10 games. In this matchup we see the Spurs getting center/power forward Tim Duncan involved quite a bit as he looks to rebound from an off night where has was 5-of-14 shooting last game against New Orleans. San Antonio has won three games in a row versus the Lakers. Earlier this season at the Staple Center, this matchup was a pick ?em and is now -13.5. But the spot favors a rested San Antonio team that looks to bounce back from a disappointing loss, going against a Lakers team that is playing back- to-back road games, has major injuries to key players, and plays lousy defense.?As a result?it is very hard to get to the window any time soon with this current Lakers squad and we are inclined to lay the points. ? College Basketball Betting: West Virginia considers lineup changes | |
| West Virginia at Texas -4.5 O/U 125.5 No shortage of topics when it comes to West Virginia basketball these days. Beat writers have already worn out the lack of toughness/no leadership angles. Now they?re going the potential lineup change route. The Mountaineers' big men have vastly underachieved and as a result, the team has been killed on the boards. Head coach Bob Huggins, who may or may not punch someone or something before the year is out, is considering going the small-ball route. The only problem is the team is shooting 28.7% from three. The Mountaineers have shot better than 50% eFG twice this season (vs. Marist and Oakland). Tonight they face one of the best defenses in the country in Texas (0.84 points per posession allowed). ''You sit here and you think, 'maybe we play smaller,' ''he said. "Maybe those guys can make a shot and we can spread people out a little bit and we can drive it and get to the foul line a little more. But then we're not going to rebound it. It's going to be really hard to stop the people in this league that have the good quality ''bigs'' to play that small. ''I would guess when you're not rebounding with your bigs, what's the difference? If you're not going to rebound it, you're not going to rebound it.'' ?Tags: College Basketball West Virginia Mountaineers Texas Longhorns | |
NBA Handicapping: Bettors eager to bet defense-less Lakers OVER the total
| LA Lakers at San Antonio -13.5 O/U 213.5 Rarified air for tonight's Lakers-Spurs pointspread. Seven of the last 10 in the series were lined 4.5 or less. Only one was priced at double-digits (Kobe didn't play). But the adjustment is obviously warranted considering LA's play of late (0-4 SU/ATS run) and injury situation ? and the fact they are in a back-to-back situation while the Spurs are rested. We saw a massive move toward the over in last night's Lakers-Rockets game. CRIS opened 219 and closed 223.5 and the game still went over by 13.5 points. Tonight?s total has always been peppered ? CRIS opened 212 and is already as high as 214.? Tags: NBA Los Angeles Lakers San Antonio Spurs | |
