Atlantic Beach mayor finally presides at meeting

ATLANTIC BEACH, S.C. --?

It took almost two years, but Atlantic Beach Mayor Jake Evans has finally presided over his first town council meeting.

Evans presided over a one-hour meeting Monday, The Sun News of Myrtle Beach ( http://bit.ly/1bkIHiH) reported. In the past such meetings have lasted for hours with bickering over town business.

Evans was first elected in November of 2011. But the newspaper reports that Mayor Retha Pierce and Councilwoman Windy Price worked to get a special election held in May of 2012.

Evans won that election overwhelmingly although the outcome was then appealed all the way to the state Supreme Court.

Evans finally took office as mayor last week.

The council filled the vacant positions of town attorney, town manager and town auditor.

Neither Price nor another council member attended Monday's meeting.

Pierce did attend the session, speaking during the public comment portion of the meeting.

Pierce said she had wanted to make sure everything that was done was legal, but added, "I do pledge my intent to work with you in a constructive manner."
