Dr. Emily Rivet appreciates Bon Secours? interest in women?s health. At Tidewater Surgical Specialists and the Bon Secours Center for Colon and Rectal Diseases, she and colleagues offer comprehensive care for patients suffering from diseases of the colon and rectum.

What are some trends in your area?
One thing we?re seeing now is rates of colon and rectal cancer are decreasing in the screened populations ? those over 50 ? but seem to be increasing in populations younger than 50. Unfortunately, squamous cell cancer of the anus, which is a separate type of disease process, also seems to be increasing in young women.

Are women?s colons different?
Functional problems like constipation and fecal incontinence seem to be more common in women overall, probably related to childbirth and the different shape of the female pelvis to accommodate that process.

What should people know?
Often when people have an issue, they assume it is a hemorrhoid or something benign, but sometimes it is more ominous. It is important to get it checked early. There are some great new treatment options available for many issues, so it?s time to start the conversation.

What are some tips for a healthy colon?
What?s good for you overall is good for your colon. ??Maintain a healthy weight. ??Exercise regularly. ??Eat a diet high in fiber and low in red meat. ??Avoid colon-cleansing regimens.
